The Feeding Ground

Epilogue

The specter of a girl stood before an out-cropping of rock. A small cave in the middle of the woods, about a mile away from civilization. She entered, peering into the dark. A pile of bones, a feeding ground. There were too many to count. She pondered who these people were in life. People from all different regions. People gone missing that were never, and most likely never would be, found again. Nearest to the entrance she found what she was looking for. Confirming what she already knew, but was too afraid to confront before. The body of a teenage girl, pick down to the bone and whatever else left decaying away. Funny, it was her favorite dress torn to shreds. But that wasn't what broke her heart. It was the body next to hers, an arm outstretched, reaching for her. Liza. Her body in a similar state. She wept for her friend, for she knew that her end was not pleasant. That night that she ran from the cabin, the cave, she was running away from Liza, not toward her. And yet, they were next to each other the whole time. The girl finally understood. She could go now.
