“Okay so, books or movies?” Ashton asked Michael, and the two of them were out together drinking some tea. Michael had asked Ashton a little while ago to hang out, and he was more than thankful that Ashton had said yes.

“Definitely books,” Michael replied, smiling fondly at the boy that he was sitting across from. “What about you?”

“Books,” Ashton told him, stirring the sugar around in his tea with his spoon. “I always thought books were way more interesting than movies. I only like movies when the plot is really interesting, or if I’m watching it with someone else.”

“Is that so?” Michael asked, leaning forward.

            “Yeah.”

“Then how would you like to see a movie with me sometime? I think this is going pretty well, right?” Michael smiled, causing Ashton’s cheeks to heat up.

“Yes, I would love to go out with you again.” Ashton blushed, taking a sip of his tea afterwards.

“Does this mean we’re on a date?” Michael pondered, looking the flustered boy directly in his eyes. Ashton just smiled, batting his eyelashes cheekily.

“It can mean whatever you want it to mean.”

“Okay, then this is a date.” Michael smiled once again, finishing the rest of his tea. Ashton was hardly finished with his, but he didn’t seem to care. He was purposely trying to take longer so that he could spend more time with Michael.

Michael came to the conclusion that Ashton was incredibly fun to hang out with―he was very funny, intelligent, sweet, shy, and he liked a lot of the things that Michael liked. Plus, Michael just thought the boy was adorable no matter what he did or what he talked about. He’d been listening to Ashton obsess over Matty Healy for a good while, but he wasn’t complaining. Michael thought Matty was quite talented and good looking, so he didn’t blame Ashton for being obsessed with him.

At this point, Michael was finally taking Ashton home after their tea. Well, technically he wasn’t taking Ashton home―he was taking him to Luke’s―but he practically lived there. The ride there was spent with a comfortable silence and subtle glances; both of their minds swarming with thoughts about how well their day went together.

When Michael pulled up outside of Luke’s house, he offered to walk Ashton up to his door. They stood on the porch, staring at each other until Michael finally decided to break the silence. He reached out his hand, cupping Ashton’s face with one hand as he began to smooth his thumb over his cheek bones. Michael moved his hand from the boy’s cheek to the back of his neck; gently running his fingers along the small of his back. And then finally, when Ashton thought his heart couldn’t pound any harder, Michael proved him wrong when he planted a small kiss on the boy’s forehead.

“Thankyou for taking me out, Michael,” Ashton blushed. “It’ll be my treat next time when we go to the movies.”

“You don’t have to pay, baby.”

Ashton felt butterflies in his stomach when Michael had called him baby, and that was when he realized he wanted Michael to stay with him for a little longer. Ashton suggested to Michael that he should come inside for a little; he knew Luke’s family well enough to know they wouldn’t mind. Not only that, but his cousin’s family really adored Michael―probably not anywhere near as much as Ashton adored him, though.

As soon as Ashton opened the door, he saw Luke and Calum sitting on the couch. Luke smirked at Ashton when he saw the two of them, but Ashton gave Luke the same look back. Luke was in the middle of tutoring Calum for chemistry, but he didn’t mind if Ashton and Michael wanted to hang around.

“Michael, is that you?” Liz came into the room, a smile visible on her face.

“Yeah, it’s me.” Michael answered, and Liz came over to hug him.

“I figured because you’re the only one of Luke’s friends with an outrageous yet amazing hair color,” she laughed, looking the boy in the eyes. “How’ve you been? I hear you and Ashton have really hit it off.”

“I couldn’t be better. And yes, you could say that,” Michael winked at Ashton, causing the boy to hide his face in his hands from blushing. The two of them sat down beside Luke and Calum, but they still wanted to give the two of them some space. Everyone in the house knew about Luke’s crush on Calum except for Calum, and they wanted to let them enjoy their tutoring time with each other.

“Okay Calum, do you understand the concept of the Lewis Dot Diagram now?” Luke asked the dark haired boy, hoping that he would say yes. Luke didn’t understand what Calum was even having trouble with. The Lewis Dot Diagram was easy, and Calum would ask questions that had nothing to do with chemistry at all.

“Yeah sure,” he answered, playing with his sleeves. “What are the weak bonds called again?”

“Hydrogen bonds. They’re called weak because it doesn’t take much to break a bond between two elements. For example, take h2o. It’s represented in a diagram with two hydrogens and one oxygen. It’s a covalent bond because it’s ‘sharing’ an electron. If one side wins and gets closer to the electron―meaning it’s partially negative―it would be considered a polar covalent bond.” Luke explained, leaving Calum with a totally lost look on his face.

“I just needed to know what hydrogen bonds were,” Calum laughed. “Thanks for confusing me.”

“Sorry, it’s just…it’s basic chemistry. I don’t understand how someone wouldn’t get the basics of it,” Luke sighed, “I thought anyone would understand it.”

            “Are you calling me stupid?”

“No, I never said that.” Luke argued.

“You never not said it,” Calum crossed his arms.

“Calum please don’t start this. I never called you stupid. There are many things you are much better at than me―sports, music, Spanish, art, and so much more. Just because I may understand chemistry more doesn’t mean you’re stupid. I’m sorry for making you think I called you stupid and for being a smart-ass about it.” Luke twirled his pencil around with his fingers, looking at his dark haired friend.

“Lucas Hemmings, what did you just say?” Liz asked, her hands on her hips.

“Sorry mom…I meant smart-aleck.” Luke apologized, his face getting red.

            “That’s what I thought.”

Calum and Luke continued with the chemistry work. Michael and Ashton were still sitting on the couch beside the two of them, getting comfortable next to each other. Ashton could feel the heat radiating off of Michael’s body, and he wanted nothing more than to rest his head on Michael’s chest to share his warmth. Ashton pressed his face into Michael’s shoulder, and the soft fabric of his sweater tickled his cheeks.

Michael’s sweet scent made Ashton melt into his touch, his eyes fluttering closed. Michael wrapped an arm around Ashton’s waist, his thumb fiddling with the material of Ashton’s shirt. Even though they hadn’t known each other for too long, they immediately felt as if they were attached at the hip. They were comfortable together, and both of them were unknowing of the other’s fondness towards them. From what Luke has told Ashton, Michael seemed different than most guys Ashton would think of going for, but that was perfectly fine with him.

Just like in chemistry, opposites attract.
