madelina threw her phone down on the couch, and a small frown took over her features when she heard her fathers stern voice through the hallway. she immediately folded the blanket she was previously laying under, and she gasped when he suddenly appeared behind her.
"are you not gonna greet your father?" he asked, but his voice held an underlying anger hidden beneath it. she tried to force a smile, and she kissed his cheek so briefly she barely even touched his skin.
"hi." her voice came out quieter than intended, and she scolded herself for it. she cleared her throat, and her father narrowed his eyes slightly.
"did you cook dinner?" he asked, noticing the immediate shock on his daughters face, and that itself spoke enough words. "of course you didn't." he scoffed, and madelina fought the urge to sigh.
"i'm sorry, dad. i went out to eat with my friends-"
"your friends?" he scoffed, shaking his head slightly. "you mean those boys?" madelina's nose was suddenly hit with the scent of alcohol, and she swallowed down the lump that started to form in her throat. he was drunk.
"yes." she answered shortly, and her father took a sharp inhale, stepping back so he could grab his cigarettes from the table in the kitchen.
"madelina, madelina, madelina." he scolded, disappointment clear in his every move, and she frowned. she should've expected this, and she should've prepared some food. "i have been working the entire day, and the least i deserve is a nice cooked meal from my daughter." he spat the last word like he was disgusted, and madelina would he lying if she said it didn't hurt her.
ever since her mother left off with another man to live in indonesia, her home life has been everything but home to her. it wasn't like life before was so great, but her parents arguing daily was better than silence or her father taking all his anger out on her.
"i'm sorry, i'll cook something-"
"no," he cut her off, his cigarette dangling from his mouth loosely. "i don't want to hear it."
"i'm sorry."
her father stared at her for a moment with squinted eyes, before his eyes traveled down her body. a scowl made its way onto his face when he noticed her wearing pants that definitely belonged to a boy, and he nudged his head towards them with a scoff.
"whose are those?"
madelina furrowed her eyebrows in confusion while she looked down, before she realised she was wearing- matt's pants? what the fuck?
"matt." she barely dared to say his name, and waited for the impact of her fathers disapproval.
"matt?" he repeated, his tone already harsher than before, and he raised his eyebrows. "i thought you hated that boy?"
"i do." she quickly nodded, and her father eyed her suspiciously.
"then why are you wearing his pants?" he asked, his voice getting louder by each word, and madelina stepped back unconsciously.
"i thought they were chris'" she rambled, not realising she only was digging a deeper hole for herself.
"is chris your boyfriend?"
"no-"
"then you shouldn't be wearing his pants!" he yelled, interrupting the girl who fought back a sigh. she wanted to scream back, she wanted to yell how stupid he sounded, she wanted to storm out of the room, but she didn't do any of that.
"i know." she falsely agreed, nodding her head. "i'll take them off as soon as i go upstairs." she lied straight through her teeth- she was not taking them off.
"you won't-" his voice got interrupted when a loud ringing echoed through the room, and her father sighed loudly, taking off towards the kitchen.
madelina already knew it was probably one of her fathers new girlfriends, and she rolled her eyes with a huff.
she scrunched up her nose when she heard sudden yells coming from the kitchen, and she decided not to think of it too long- her dad probably fucked up once again like he does with every girlfriend ever.
she grabbed her phone and noticed a missed call from chris and a message from- matt?
she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, and her lips parted slightly when she read she message.

"what the fuck are you looking at." her fathers aggravating voice startled her, and she turned her phone off in an instant.

"put on some decent clothes," he spat, shaking his head in disappointment once again. "you look like a fucking boy."

she grabbed her phone and one of the sweaters she hung over the lounge chair and ran off to her room, not bothering to look back at her father who was still pacing around the living room.
she thought about matt his text again, and her fingers hovered over her screen, debating wether she should stay home or not. even though tonight was definitely not as bad as usual, she still didn't know what the rest of the evening was going to bring.
besides, she was bored anyways.
