Being dumped by her first boyfriend, Russell, over the holidays has left seventeen-year-old Kerry feeling miserable and rejected. The end of school is looming and she has no clue what to do with the rest of her boring life, feeling stuck in the small, quiet Sussex town where she lives. To distract herself from thoughts of Russell, she signs up for the school production, The Phantom of the Opera. At the audition she meets Helena, who intrigues her with her unexplained ailments and solitude. As she becomes obsessed with the mystery that surrounds the enigmatic Helena, she begins to spend less time with best friend Abby. And being involved in the show has other benefits – such as the attentions of fellow actor Sean (‘the Phantom’). He is funny and observant, sometimes charmingly, sometimes clumsily. When Kerry gets hurt in a school fire, it is Helena who is first on the scene to help her. Kerry becomes wary of her new friend and her strange behaviour, and confronts her. Soon Kerry finds herself drawn into a world where the truth is improbable, and where each secret leads to another. A world of suspicion and danger, leaving the pair running for their lives.
