For generations, the descendants of the Fae King have been receiving pieces of a prophecy. It has been foretold that a chosen one will come to save Asteria from an insidious spreading darkness that brings with it the promise of world shattering calamities. When River is "retrieved", he's whisked away into a realm he never knew existed and told he's solely responsible for saving because of a family revelation. Although he does fit criteria, he's adamant that he's the wrong person. Arie has seen visions of River and the successful outcome of his involvement but upon meeting, he too begins to doubt whether River is the one who has been promised. As the two spend time together, River begins to realize it no longer matters whether or not he's the prophesied; he'll help Arie save the realm or die trying. When the chosen one has yet to step up, will the least likely hero be able to save the world?
