He was meant to die with honor, as a sacrifice to the fertility god Tlālōc, and find his way to Tlālōcān, after being drowned in a river. Instead, Tletlatlcoatl accidentally clung onto a portal door and ripped it open. Tōnacātēcuhtli is not pleased; Tlālōcan was supposed to absorb the souls instead, but Tletlatlcoatl and the other sacrifices got blasted through the portal, and into modern times. Upon hearing this, Tōnacātēcuhtli decided to track them down, but he only managed to find Tletlatlcoatl (now known as Atl) living in modern-day California, thanks to Mictlan Mike tracking him down. Through haunting Atl's dreams, he reluctantly agrees to help Tōnacātēcuhtli track down the rest of the sacrifices, and pull the souls back through time, and back where they rightfully belong. It won't be an easy ride. Based on ONC prompt 40: Accidentally stuck in a place between life and death, you open a door that allowed the dead into the world of the living. Now you and the grim reaper have to pull each of those souls back.
