My name is Lila Bennett. Two months ago I turned eighteen and I was officially considered an adult. For most teenagers turning 18 means freedom and finally reaching the age where your parents begin to hand the reigns of life over to you. For me, turning eighteen meant something entirely different. My birthday signified the day I was no longer a ward of the state of New Jersey, I was no longer an orphaned child given up by my unknown parents, and I was now considered an adult. Some people may think being considered an adult is great, but for me it meant I was no longer able to guarantee a place for me to rest my head at night. The most recent director at the group home I was placed in said I could stay until my bed was needed. With the turnover rate at most group homes, I knew that promise of a bed would not last long. Fantastic. Fortunately, my boss was giving me the opportunity of a lifetime up in Andromeda Bay, NY. This small town in the middle of the forest could be my only way to a better life. Hopefully I can finally find my happiness.
