It's called "The Miracle of Mormonism" The author is Charles Abbott. Abbott is a convert to the Church. He is also a lawyer. Therefore he believes in evidence and in witnesses. Consequently this book takes a somewhat unique approach in dealing with retention. It is full of evidence and the stories of witnesses about how membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints can lead to both short and long-term blessings – especially if you do it right. The book is written for the benefit of five groups of people:(1) Persons who are investigating the Church and considering Baptism(2) Persons who have recently joined the Church(3) Young people who are making decisions about standards and values(4) Long-time members who are struggling with their testimonies(5) Long-time members who may have become less activeAbbott believes that everyone acts in what they "perceive" to be their own self-interest. Also, immediate gratification can seem more important than long-term rewards. Giving up something now to get something better in the future can be a hard choice.Abbott joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints over 50 years ago, at the age of 20. In this book he says that through his membership in the Church he has been blessed beyond measure, but when he joined the Church he did not understand what it took to receive those blessings. Mormonism is "a new way of life" and while it is a wonderful new way of life it sometimes takes months or years to understand the long-term benefits that will flow from it. It is also true that sometimes young people don't understand how and why their involvement in the programs and doctrines of the Church will bless their lives, and there are even some long-time adult members who struggle.
