From the insignificant ages of five and seven, Lucy Harmon and her younger sister Beth had the makings of true scholars. Beth was talented in mathematics and science, and by the age of thirteen could play chess better than men nearly double her age. Lucy, on the other hand, had other passions. While Beth was thirteen, beating seasoned chess players, a fifteen year old Lucy was already fluent in French, Italian, and developed an obsession with the arts. Other than supporting her sister, Lucy had no other interest in the game Beth adores. That is, until US Chess Champion Benny Watts took interest in her.
