In a country ravaged by the effects of a meaningless war and the resulting economic downturn, families who can no longer take care of their children start throwing them onto the streets. Parents keep only the most 'valuable' children; those who can work and help support the family. Elysia Pop was thrown out when she was four years old and since then lived on the streets, dodging the police who would, at best, send her to work in a factory or, at worst, kill her. She learned to take care of herself and learned to stay away from others so when Samuel Rose took an interest in her welfare she tries to push him away. But some people can't be pushed away and some stories are meant to be told. ON HIATUS
