"Welcome to the world, moje malá holka: Antoinette." I believe that it is important to keep the stories of our ancestors alive for many reasons, but perhaps the most important reasons are to honor their memory and thank them for their sacrifices. This is a true story of my great-great grandma, Antoinette Šeplová, who was forced to come to America all on her own at the young age of 13 around 1900. Every part of this short, episodic fiction is based on records, old letters, and accounts from family members to piece together her life's story as a Czech immigrant in America. From a Pietist commune in Iowa to the rough neighborhoods of the Chicago South Side, my great-great grandmother's story is one I continue my work unraveling to this day. My mother fled Somalia as soon as the war broke out. She left the land that held skies laden with views of the hidden night, and had seas a more pristine blue than anything I could imagine. She came to a foreign land where she was unwanted and unappreciated, and had to rebuild herself from scratch. And it was from this, that I learned to go into a lonely pursuit of excellence. Aditi and West hate each other. They bicker, they flirt, and are possibly a little in love. Blotching the hot new guy's shirt with chocolate-mixed spit is probably not the best idea of a revenge, but Aditi soon discovers that she doesn't regret it one bit. Because despite being a jerk, West too knows what it's like to be brown, Muslim and falling apart in an all-white high school, and when he gets entangled in Aditi's struggle to tackle a debilitating trauma and a really, really loud Bangladeshi wedding, the fledgeling love-hate relationship will leave her either healed or heartbroken. Or pretty dead, because an outbreak of crimes is gripping her quaint little town in fear, and the gorgeous flirt she's falling for has his fair share of ugly secrets. - FEATURED BY @Wattpad: Summer days, summer love; Community Curator: @grendelthegood; Summer loving days THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION AND DOESN'T INTEND TO OFFEND.
