Chapter 27

Kayla Martin

"Are you sure this looks alright?" Evie asked dubiously.

"It looks great!" I insisted. She wore a flowy white tank top over black high waisted shorts. Her hair was in its naturally curly state, the large auburn ringlets cascading down her back. Her makeup was done lightly, the subtle purple eyeliner matching her purple stilettos.

I, on the other hand, was wearing my now-signature black flats, my leg now in a boot instead of a cast. A boot that went up my whole leg. A rather ugly boot, if you asked me.

"It's better than the cast, and you don't need crutches anymore." Evie said, almost as if reading my mind. I let out a sigh, fluffing up my straightened hair to add volume. Luckily the boot was just black so it matched my faded denim shorts and coral blouse. My makeup was fairly light also, the minty gloss tingling on my lips.

"You ready?" I asked Evie giddily.

"No." She said flatly.

"You're so blunt." I laughed wistfully. "I wish I could say what was on my mind so easily." she shrugged, nonchalant.

"Some people think I'm insensitive. I just don't care." She winked, before hopping into her silver Honda and slamming the door shut, beckoning for me to do the same.

The boys offered to drive us, of course, but since we were getting ready together it only made sense that we drive together too. The first few minutes were passed in silence, before I spoke up.

"I'm glad the weather is warm enough to wear shorts now." I said positively. She waved off my comment, slipping on her large sunglasses as the sun glared in our eyes.

"It was warm enough to wear shorts in march, you wimps just wouldn't wear them till now!" She exclaimed loudly. I shook my head in amazement.

"Ev, we live in New Hampshire, not Florida!" I reminded her.

"We're so far north we might as well live in Canada!" She said happily. "I just love Canadians!"

"Devon is Canadian." I blurted out almost instinctively. The corners of her mouth tugged up into a small smirk. Before I could ask her why, the engine stopped.

"We're here!" She said happily. I looked out the window to see that we were parked outside Crystal Lake park, some big fancy park just a quick drive from my house. My eyebrows furrowed.

"This is where we're going?" I asked.

"No, we're going to the mall. I just thought you might want to walk there." Evie said sarcastically, hopping out of the car and scanning the parking lot.

"There's his truck!" She said, skipping off happily to a large black truck. I looked around to see Devon's car, but it wasn't there, I frowned, catching up with Evie. She was over sitting in the back of the truck with some blond man, who I assumed to be Cole. I didn't want to interrupt, so I turned around only to see Devon climbing out the passenger side.

"Devon!" I cried in surprise.

"You guys know each other?" I asked, motioning between them.

"Yeah, you know his date?" He asked, dumbfounded. I laughed at the coincidence.
