“You are going to get us killed, Derrick. Move it!”

“This was your brilliant plan, so shut up before your big mouth leads them right to us.”

“We still have five flights to the basement. We’re never going to make it if we wait for the kid.”

“You leave Jayda out of this. She shouldn’t even be here, and wouldn’t be if you hadn’t dragged me into your mess.”

The boxes, laden with years of falsified documents, weighted the two men as they navigated the dim stairwell.

“Jayda!” Derrick called, squinting back through the grimy darkness.

Silence met the call. The anxious father tried to recall the last time he heard his ten-year-olds voice or footfalls.

Vito slipped past Derrick, and glancing over his shoulder, hissed, “Good luck to you. If I make it out, you’re on your own. Try explaining your way out of this, Mr. Administrative Officer. See how much your adoring public loves you once they discover your little secret.”

Vito slipped off into the darkness, leaving Derrick as far behind as his burden would allow.

“Daddy, help!”

The girl’s frantic cry shattered the infernal silence.
