Chapter 16-

*Beau’s POV*

A sharp tapping on my door yanked me from slumberland. No one usually knocked in this place, so puzzled I answered.

“Yes?” I questioned the panic-stricken woman on the otherside. She was dressed in a white blouse and black pencil skirt; my best guess was a secretary.

“Are you Mr Brooks?” She asked me.

“Yep,” I replied nodding my head.

“I have a phone call for you.” She spoke so quickly it was difficult to understand her.

“Who’s phoning me?” I asked, worried it was some lawyer or solicitor, I was being released in two days and my worst fear was that there’d been a mix up and I’d have to stay.

“A girl,” She said, “I think her name was Tilly.” My stomach flipped but my heart sunk to my feet. Why would she phone me now after three months of not talking to me? She didn’t need me and I’d be a fool to convince myself otherwise.

“I’m sorry, I’ve never heard of anyone by that name.” The words escaped my lips before I recognised what I was saying.

“Oh,” the woman frowned. “But you are Beau Brooks right?”

“Yes,” I stated, my face forming a glare. “And I, Beau Brooks, do not know anyone called Tilly and the only girl that would phone me would be my mother. I’m here on a rape charge, that doesn’t really appeal to the female gender.”

“But…” a look of suspicion clouded the woman’s eyes, turning them a pale grey colour, “Nevermind, I shouldn’t be doing this anyway.” She shook her head, turned on her heel and stalked off. I went back to lying on my bed; staring at the all too familiar grey stone ceiling that shortly I’d never have to see again in my life. As I lay there my mind raked over what I’d just done. What did the woman tell Tilly? Why had she even phoned in the first place? What if something was wrong and I’d just ignored it? That last thought petrified me for about an hour till I realised that if it were something serious with Luke, Mum or Jai then one of them would’ve phoned not Tilly. Still, I really probably shouldn’t have ignored her, who knows what was happening.

The arrival of Friday came round slower than I would’ve liked, but by ten o’clock I was stood by the side of a uniformed officer, and for the first time in six months I was wearing my own clothes. Skinny jeans, a navy and white striped jumper, blue vans and a snapback. How I’d missed my hats. I waved joyfully as Luke, Jai and Mum came rushing through the door at once.

“BEAU!” Jai yelled, “WE’RE GOING HOME!”

“I KNOW!” I screamed back, it was good to finally be free again. Mum linked her arm through mine and Luke took my bag whilst Jai continued to run round like an overexcited puppy. We followed him to the car; Luke deposited my bag and climbed into the back with Jai.

“Mind if I drive Mum?” I asked as she jingled the keys.

“Sure thing honey,” she smiled at me, “If you can remember how.” I winced slightly at her words, but just shrugged it off cause I knew she was joking. She handed me the keys and I clambered into the driver’s seat of my car.

“I’ve missed this,” I breathed as I relaxed into the chair, my hands grasping the steering wheel as I reversed slowly out of the car park. Driving brought back that sense of freedom I’d never really appreciated before.
