It was New Year's Eve, I was by myself in the apartment I had newly rented to get away from my ex-boyfriend. As I fixated my gaze on the plastic object resting on the countertop of my bathroom, my breathing became erratic. My eyes began to fill up with tears; this couldn't be happening, especially when I had just gained the strength to leave him. The rhythm of my heart remained abnormal, skipping one or two beats as the second crimson line on the pregnancy test gradually but surely appeared. The palm of my hand instantly reached the center of my stomach as I burst into sobs. I couldn't believe it; I wasn't prepared to grow into parenthood and care for a criminal's child on my own. I slid down the mauve walls of the bathroom until my body was resting on the frigid marble tiles. How would I inform my family that I am expecting a baby for Maurizio Romano, the head of a criminal organization? How would I inform Maurizio about this? I'm afraid of how his reaction would occur, including if he would want to raise the child or act as though the baby, I'm bringing into the world and I don't exist.
