AS FAR AS STEVE HARRINGTON KNOWS, Cleo has always lived right next door. He doesn't remember the day she moved in, but he remembers the day her head popped up and she looked over the fence at him, her wide grin revealing two missing front teeth, and she'd declared that they'd be best friends, from that day on.
Now, best friends is a bit of a stretch ━ Cleo is home-schooled by a wildly overprotective father, and that means she doesn't get to go out much, but a few times over the years, she pops her head over the fence, and they'll talk for a while. Sure, Cleo's a little odd, but she doesn't know him as 'King Steve'. With her, he can just be Steve, for a little while.
Of course, on the night of Halloween 1983, just days before Will Byers goes missing, neither of them knows that their worlds will change forever soon. Instead, she pops over the fence one last time, a rabbit mask in hand, asking him to take her trick-or-treating.
She had no idea that one simple thing would have so many consequences.
