My first attempt at a short story...tell me what you think? :)

There's going to be about three or four chapters.

It was a brisk September afternoon; the kind that make your face flush and your nose run. I inhaled the cool air deeply, letting it burn my airways. I loved that feeling.

I kicked the football with all my energy into the net that my older brother, Will, had set up for me in our backyard. Our backyard was spacious, with a forest that seemed to go on forever behind it.

I went and retrieved the ball, and ended up repeating what I did over and over again. Kick, retrieve. Kick, retrieve. The big game at school against our biggest rivals was coming up and I needed to practice every chance I got.

I heard a sound coming from over my left shoulder, and I snapped my head around.

"Hey, Shayna." His familiar, rich textured voice rang.

"Hi, Evan."

It was the usual short conversation we had all the time before he went back inside with the soccer ball he came out to get.

That's how things were between us these days. I secretly wished things could go back to the way they were before. Back to when we were inseparable. When we were the best of friends. Sometimes I wondered if he could still remember those days like I could. The days we spent in my backyard playing soccer, the days we spent up in the treehouse, the days we spent building snowmen on his driveway.I missed the brown eyed, slightly chubby boy I used to know. I just wanted my best friend back. Why did people always have to grow up?

The next morning I found myself in front of the mirror struggling to figure out a way to situate my mop of black curls. My hair was a complete mess. Naturally, it fell into loose ringlets, which I didn't particularly mind. I lived with it. But right then it was a nightmare. A frizzy nightmare.

I finally decided to comb some dry shampoo through it, hoping it would calm down, which it did. Thank god.

I coated my eye lashes with mascara and lined my plain brown eyes with eyeliner. Anything to make my eyes less boring than normal.

Running down the stairs, I slung my backpack over my shoulders and grabbed a granola bar from the pantry since I didn't have time for breakfast. I stumbled out of my house as the bus came and hurried onto it.

Within ten minutes, we arrived at school. The bus ride was always short; there were hardly any people that even rode it. I hastily stopped at my locker, knowing that I was probably already late. My best friend, Tyler, managed to make me even later by having the most pointless conversation with me. As much as I wanted to listen to Tyler, I just wanted him to shut up and leave so I could get to class on time. He was always the reason I was late. I loved him, he was my best friend in the world, but he needed to leave me alone before I got detention.

I managed to make it to make it to my class on time, even after talking to Tyler. It was some sort of miracle, I swore.

At lunch, I sat with the guys as always. Same table, same people. Everyday.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Evan walking towards our table and my heart raced a little. I was always a little nervous around him. I just never knew what was on his mind or what he saw me as. His ex-best friend? His friend? His acquaintance? Or simply just his next-door neighbor?

He sat down at one of the open spots at our table, which happened to be right next to me, “Hey guys. So Drew is having a party at his house tomorrow night. I’m supposed to invite everyone; are you guys free?”

“I’m grounded.” One of my friends, Josh, told us all.

“Joshy-poo! What did you do this time?” I teased and he rolled his eyes with a short laugh.

A few of the guys had other things they had to do, but Tyler and Collin were in, so I decided to go too. I knew Will wouldn’t mind, and it’s my senior year so it was basically a law that I attended parties. And hey, yolo.

Yes, I just said yolo.

“What time?” I questioned.

“Eight o’clock.”

Tyler asked, “Are there going to be parents?”

Evan shook his head, “They’re out of town for the weekend.”

The pure sound of this was practically screaming disaster...
