The hot sand burned my feet, causing me to wince in pain. I hurried over to my towel sprawled out on the burning sand pebbles. “Honey, why so jumpy?” My mom turned toward me, pushing her sunglasses to her nose. She was expecting me to answer. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms in front of my chest. “The sand is burning hot. The beach is really crowded. Oh and my little sister keeps going up to people and asking if they have seen an alien!” I point to Melody, currently tapping a man’s fat wrist requesting he answer her extraterrestrial question. My mother sighs. “She likes outer space. Can’t you support her new interests?” I scowl at my mom and stomp off to the waves.

The cooling sensation of the waves as they lap against my ankles soothes me. It’s like a three-hour yoga session reduced to seconds. Just one step into the cool salty water and you could melt away your stress. My toes dig deeper into the cold, damp sand. I sigh and draw circles in the salty goop with my foot. “So far, one person has said aliens exist!” My sister reports to me. I merely nod and return to the goop that’s starting to surround my ankles.

Melody points to the ocean. “I bet aliens have crashed into the sea! Can we go look?” Melody squeals. I glare at her. “You can’t be serious.” Melody grins and nods. “Oh, I’m serious.” She smirks and pulls me into the water deeper. The water was now wading at my waist. As for Melody, it was at her neck. Melody had this crazy idea that if she breathed really heavily then the water might lower. “Melody, the water is too high for you. Let’s go back.” I point towards Mom. She glares at me and pulls me out further.

Okay, I do have to admit, I’m not great at swimming. Melody was a great swimmer; she adored swimming ever since she was little. “Melody, I can’t swim remember.” I plead. I can’t leave Melody in the sea alone. She just glares at me, once more and continues to search underwater for alien clues. The beach seems to get further and further away. I frown and pull Melody out to the shore. “I wasn’t done yet!” Melody whined. I rolled my eyes and throw her in front of Mom. “She insisted on drowning me!” I complain. My mom pulls down her sunglasses again and raises her eyebrow at Melody.

“Remember your sister can’t swim Mel. Why don’t you get some ice cream?” My mom suggested. I let my mouth drop open and watch as Melody skipped towards the ice cream shop called Mr. Cooleys. “So you let her off easy?” I ask, the stress breaking my voice. “She’s seven, you’re seventeen.” My mom says, not taking an eye off her modeling magazine. “Yeah, but at least I’m not weird like her!” I growl. More insults pointed towards Melody rolled off my tongue. My mom put down her magazine and frowned. “Beach house, NOW!” She pointed her gruesome finger at our summer home. I glared at her and turned on the back of my heel.

“Lousy sister.” I mumbled. My towel was in one hand and my sunglasses in the other. I stomped down the street until I met the driveway to our little house. I swung the front door open. It crashed into my mom’s bamboo plant and the plant went tumbling to the ground. I smiled as I saw the destruction on the floor. Ha, that’s what you get when you mess with me, mom!

I continued down the hall and waddled into my room. I flung my towel over my head, towards my bathroom door. With a ‘thump’ it hit the door and tumbled to the ground. Like I cared. My feet leapt onto my comfy bed and I sat there. I waited for my mom and Melody to come home.

Three loud knocks radiated from the door. “It’s open” I mumbled. Zach, my 18-year old brother, peeked through my door. “Oh, I thought you were Mom.” I admitted. He stepped into my messy room, trying to avoid my clothes. “And I thought my room was messy.” He chuckled. I threw a pillow smack in the face.

“Hey!” Zach yelled in his defense. Now it was my turn to laugh. “Why are you back from the beach so soon?” Zach asked, desperate to change the topic of throwing pillows. I sighed. “Mom and Melody” I grumbled. Zach nodded his head.

“Wait… Why are you here?” I raised an eyebrow at him. He smiled sheepishly. “Mom doesn’t like it when I flirt with people….” Zach admitted. I tried to contain my laughter. Key Word: tried. I burst into a fit of laughter and felt my six-pack starting to show. “Heyyyy” Zach frowned. “It isn’t funny.” I just laughed more and more. “Okay, maybe it is!” He smiled and chuckled.

Out of nowhere, a knock comes from our door. “Who’s that?” I ask as Zack looks confusingly at the walnut door. The knock gets louder and louder. Then, it switches to poundings. “What the-“ “Don’t say it!” I warn Zach. Zach loves to curse although he knows I hate it when kids curse, even if I’m 17 myself. He pouts and looks back to the door. The pounding didn’t stop.

“Mom has keys to the house, she doesn’t need to knock.” I said, confusion cracking my voice. Zack walked up to the door and peeks out the window. The funny part about it? Zach looked like a freaking ninja! I almost burst into more giggles before Zach shot me a glare. I shiver shot up my spine, his glares are pretty traumatizing. ‘Famous People’ Zach mouthed. I went bug eyed. Famous People? Did Zach say there was Famous People at our door? My jaw hit the ground.
