Drawing My Inner Self

So you think I'm a vegetable,

You think I don't care.

You think I can't do anything,

Sitting in my wheelchair.

Yes it's true,

I can't walk the walk.

But I'm not dumb,

I can talk the talk.

Sitting in a wheelchair,

It's easy to look down on me.

But there's so much going on,

So much you can't see.

Most my life is in darkness,

But I try to keep a happy face.

'What darkness?' You may ask,

You're not in my space.

You may be thinking 'Am I blind?'

Well, I am partially.

But with the sight I have,

I see more than thee.

I'm an artist in a wheelchair,

I write stories too.

I do what I can to share,

What more can I do?

Music and animating,

Was also in me.

But they take away my energy,

Ever since my latest injury.

I wasn't born normal,

But I could do almost everything.

I was still a slow developer,

But at least I was walking.

But through out the years,

After having multiple injuries.

My condition deteriorated,

Leaving me with limited abilities.

I don't go out much now,

Just hospital and ABI centre.

My life evolves around these same old walls,

And it gets worse in the winter.

I'm an artist in a wheelchair,

I write stories too.

I do what I can to share,

What more can I do?

People coming to see us

Less and less,

They have so much to do,

Filling my life with loneliness.

I have no family here,

Just mum, dad and sister.

There's no one else beside us,

Except for paid carers.

Don't get me wrong,

I love my little family.

But there's only so much they can do,

And for their future, I worry.

I get it,

We all have a life and space,

But I'm just saying give a minute,

It would be nice to see a different face.

I'm an artist in a wheelchair,

I write stories too.

I do what I can to share,

What more can I do?

Yes, they're tough to reach right now,

But big dreams still await me.

'How will I get there?' You ask,

Your constant and genuine support will guide me.

My work may not be realistic and traditional,

Like Monet, Leo and Vincent.

Neither is Pixar and Gibli,

And Disney as of recent.

Guess what! They started small,

Just like me!

So what's the difference?

You tell me!

I will get back to animating,

I will make more art.

But, don't lose faith in me,

As you can't rush art!

I feel like Rapunzel,

Stuck in a tower.

Using my loneliness,

As the source of power.

And just like her,

I keep creating.

And keep on wondering,

'When will my life begin?'

I'm an artist in a wheelchair,

I write stories too.

I do what I can to share,

What more can I do?

Now, I live in two worlds you see,

As an artist that's bound to be.

You call them 'imaginary' and 'reality',

But to me, they are as real as can be!

Call me crazy,

Call me weird.

Just think about it,

Who got me inspired?

I have an Art degree,

Which I'm pretty proud of.

But what help did it do?

I still haven't a job.

The world still talks about 'first impressions',

Although, I'm told to be myself.

But the world still looks at my wheelchair first,

Thus, I'm drawing my inner self!
