Chapter 1

The way her hair lay gently past her shoulders almost made him stop. Golden locks fell in waves, caressing the smooth lines of her neck and shoulders. Her face was pale. The girl's soft features almost made him stop.

Almost.

But he was ravenous. In another world, perhaps, he would've noticed just how pretty the blonde was. Or maybe just fourteen days earlier. He satisfied his craving and fell on his back afterwards. In a few minutes, he drifted into a blank dream.

The memories were often what plagued him at night. The shouting of his parents, the terror of his younger sister. They thought she had the flu.

Even with his deteriorated mind, he knew the irony of it. If he had the ability to laugh, he would've.

Knowing he wouldn't be able to rest, he got up and wandered around the shopping mall. It was dark inside, considering most of the electricity was cut off. Ryan decided to watch the fountain, placed in the center of what used to be the food court.

He laid back on a bench and watched as dirty water carelessly spewed from the fountain. There was nothing entertaining for him to do. Without electricity all means of enjoyment were impossible. As his mind tossed from one incoherent thought to the next, a loud sound was heard.

No, was felt.

Something exploded inside of him and the force pushed him forward and onto the floor. His joints creaked when he landed. Ryan pushed himself off the floor and noticed the scarlett dripping down his side. He staggered for a moment, confused as to what had just occurred.

And that was when he saw the man standing behind him, brandishing a shotgun.
