CHAPTER 5 - That's not part of the job description

Monday morning came too quickly and I was dreading seeing Kailee again. I knew I hadn't treated her right. I had kissed her and than practically screamed at her all within ten minutes. How I had acted wasn't acceptable, especially as she was my colleague. I should treat her with the respect and kindness she deserves.

Unfortunately it was impossible to go back and change my actions. So instead I would have to live with them and pretend that I hadn't been a complete drunken fool on Friday night. Hopefully she would do the same. I wouldn't blame her if she didn't though.

Needing to take out some of my frustration, I arrived at work early and hit the gym. By the time I made it to the office I was feeling better but still not looking forward to seeing my partner.

Less than a minute after I sat down at my desk, Kailee was walking through the office door. My eyes instantly met hers and as much as it pains me to admit, I found it hard to look away. There was just something about this girl.

She sent me her normal morning friendly smile, at which point I found the strength to advert my gaze. I had to think of Gus. Just that thought made the events of Friday night come crashing back down on me. I had been wrong to react so strongly to her calling Angus that, she didn't know. I was more angry at myself than anything. I had let things get too far, so I took my anger out on her.

She sighed audibly as she took the seat beside me. Closing the case file I was reading I turned to her. Today we were first on call again.

"So we're on call today," I said as I slipped the case file back into the filing cabinet which sat beneath my desk.

"Ok," she responded her eyes not meeting mine.

It wasn't long before we were called out. It was another routine call, much like our previous call out. Only this time it involved a house burglary. The criminal was long gone though by the time the owner had arrived.

The journey to the house was silent. Kailee sat in the seat next to me, fiddling with the fabric of her trousers while I drove us to our destination.

The house was a red brick double fronted detached house in a nice neighbourhood. This sort of property and area wasn't usual of such crimes. I guess the criminal was going for the big stuff, items such as flat screens which would get a lot of money. It was still someone important to note though. Normally such crimes would be committed in a certain type of area. The fact this crime was an outlier could help us solve it.

I pulled up along the pavement outside of the house. The family was already waiting for us outside on the neatly mowed front lawn.

"Morning," I called as Kailee and I hopped out of our patrol car. In a few long strides we were standing opposite the family which consisted of a couple and their two children.

Upon reaching them, I spoke. "Hello, I am Officer Tyler Andrews and this is my partner Kailee Elliot."

"Hi," the man spoke. "I'm George Adams and this is my wife Alison," he introduced as he gestured to his ashen faced wife. "These are my children Paul and Philip," he continued.

After the introductions were made, Paul and Philip were sent upstairs to play while Kailee and I were led through to the kitchen. Alison poured us both a glass of water before we sat down round the large, circular, dark wood table.

I quickly explained how everything would work. They would give statement about what happened, we would take a look around, collect evidence, go back to the station and try and find any links. However, I made sure to let them know that the chance of then getting their possessions back was limited, they were probably already sold by now.
