Chap. 5

Alex  sat right at the back of the classroom, last seat, and last row. He rested his head on his arms, crossed on his desk. Smooth strands of his long, black hair messily fell over onto his face.

He had entered some minutes before the bell rang. There was nobody but him there, not even the teacher. The class seemed silent and calm.

His minutes of peace were limited, nonetheless, as the first bell of the day rang.

Soon, the class became more and more crowded. Alex saw everybody come inside, some took their seat, and some stood up and talked to each other.

But he didn't really care for any of them, just one.

Chestnut, long haired April came inside the classroom, cellphone on hand, talking with one of her friends, Madison. She tapped the send button and put her pink-cased Iphone away in her jeans’ pocket. Madison laughed at something April said, that Alex wasn't able to listen from the back of the classroom.

He watched as April took her seat in the middle of the class, three rows away from him, never noticing he was staring the whole time.

Mr. Fishkin, the Biology teacher, finally came in and silenced the class, then he took attendance.

"Anna?" he started.

"Here,"

"April?"

"Here,”

"Deanna?"

"Here,"

"Jen?"

There was no reply.

"Jen?" he called out again.

April pursed her lips at the sound of the name. She knew her best friend, Jen, wasn't coming to school that day, and there was no ordinary reason for that, but only April knew that. She felt the need to take out her Iphone and text her just to make sure she was doing okay, but refrained.

"I guess she's not coming today." Mr. Fishkin said after he looked around the classroom for Jen.

Soon, he got to the boys. The first one of the list was Alex.

"Alex?"

April swallowed as she heard his name. Instinctively, she turned her head around the classroom, looking for him. She didn't even know they had this Biology period together, well, she didn't know anything about him before the recent incidents.

"Here," he answered, his voice reminding her of their recent conversation.

I don't mind killing you.

Yesterday's words made her heart throb with certain anger and fear. That weirdo thinks he scares me. Why did she have to keep his secret anyway? He even refused to tell her why he did it and threatened her instead. Besides, she knew what he did, as simple as it was, was wrong. Simply because, stealing is wrong.

Alex felt observed and he smirked as he saw April's dark eyes staring his way.

His mischievous smile annoyed her, and she coldly and indifferently looked away.

Mr. F. did a review on what was coming on their next day's exam. April took all the notes that she considered important, it was a lot of content though, soon her notebook was filled with boring black inked words.
