Chapter 2

Keanna

First, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. It was intolerable. Then, it was tight. Squeezing all the air out of me. After that, a light, floating sensation took over.

I looked around as the ambulance rolled in. Sirens wailing.

It didn't hurt after that. Except a little, when I saw my mom and sister, Esmae, sobbing over my body lying on the ground. I noticed all the bumps and bruises all over my body. Tons of scratches and gashes overtook my face. I watched Mom call Dad. Break the horrible news. Then, burst into a round of fresh tears.

I watched paramedics lift my body off the sidewalk. The team then placed me on a stretcher and rolled it into an ambulance. My mom and sister got into the ambulance on weak legs.

I, my spirit, sat down next to Esmae. She sobbed into Mom's shoulder. I tried to comfort, her but sadly I realized she can't feel me rubbing her back or hear me whispering soothing words.

I. Am. Dead.

A ghost.

Nothing.

I have lost my family.

My family has lost me.

All my dreams of becoming a pro runner, out the window.

Gone.

My life is over, literally.

A dead end.
