Cor hid beneath the olive green army surplus blanket.

Covered like a fugitive on the run, he thought from the backseat of his mother's beat up Honda. A sliver of dull grey light made its way to his eye through a small gap at the edge of the blanket. For five hundred miles he had watched clouds, power lines, streetlights and tree tops flash by.

Twenty hours ago his mother, Jane, took the first shift, driving north for a few hours out of Los Angeles. They swapped at dusk and he took the overnight drive for the following nine hours. At dawn, they switched again, he laid down across the backseat, and she drove the final leg of the journey.
