I had been at my mother’s dance studio all day. She only had two classes today; I knew that I was going to have enough time to practice alone. Around 2:45 PM, Sarah, Ashley, and Liam came into the studio.

“Hey Liam,” I said.

“Sup Zach,” He replied. “Sarah, dinner will be ready by 6:30, please be home by then.” Liam said laughing.

“Fine Liam, after last night I will not be staying out past seven.” Sarah said giggling.

“You mean with all the cop cars storming the street?” I asked them. Ash looked confused and Liam shot me a warning look.

“Come on Ash, let’s go change and start some basic stretches.” Sarah said drawing Ashley’s attention away. Ashley and Sarah went to go change so I talked with Liam for those few minutes.

“What were all the sirens for?” I asked him.

“Carlos Lund showed up on the street drunk as hell with a gun. He was going after Luke and Sarah. My father was watering the garden when he saw him. He yelled for us to make sure that Sarah would be ok because at that time Luke and I were downstairs arguing over what to watch on TV.” Liam told me.

“He was going to kill her?” I asked choking back tears.

“Yes, you know that text I sent you last night on her phone telling you not to worry, well I sent that because the three of us, me, her brother Luke, and Sarah were all hiding under the bed in the room she’s staying in, the room that I had leaned out the window to talk to you.” Liam said. He looked like he was going to cry.

“Liam, go home.” I whispered.

“I’m here with Sarah and Ashley because Luke is at a foot ball camp.” Liam said.

“Then if I were you, I would sit over where Sarah’s dance bag is.” I said finishing a stretch I was doing. Liam walked away and I worked on a simple turn that I was supposed to know. Sarah and Ashley were stretching not far away. Liam was watching Sarah. It was strange, it looked as if Liam was in love, but from past conversations with him he thought of her as a sister. More people entered the dance studio.

“Sarah!” A guy yelled running to hug her.

“Daman!” She screamed hugging him. Liam rolled his eyes and looked through a dance catalog.

Everyone that was just showing up was stretching after changing.

“Take your place at the barre, Zach come and join the class.” My mother said entering the room. Everyone looked at me. I took the place my mother had pointed to and the class began. I then remembered why my mother wasn’t my ballet teacher, she makes you do a lot more warm ups that my teacher did. The people in front of me were whispering between themselves.

“Who is he?”

“How does she know him?”

“Class, quit talking keep working on your warm ups.” My mother snapped and they all went silent.

“We can quit our warm ups for now,” my mother said after awhile. “It’s time to start talking about our major performance for this season.” Everyone started whispering about what part they wanted.

“Since we are performing twice, Ashley and Sarah have each agreed to play the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Dew Drop.” She said. Now I understood why those two were always practicing.

“The Daman and Krista wanted to do the Arabian dancers, so we’re letting them do that, but the rest of the parts are up for grabs based off of addition.” My mother said. Everyone jumped to their feet as soon as she finished talking.

“Before I forget to mention it, we already have the Nutcracker.” My mother finished. A few guys sighed and thought of other parts.

“Zach, come speak with me in my office.” My mother said. I went over to her office like she had asked me to.

“Yes mother,” I said when she entered.

“Here you will call me Mrs. Kant, and Zach I was talking to your last ballet instructor, and he suggests you start coming here instead. You haven’t been very focused recently he noticed. Mark already decided to transfer over here because your old studio cost too much for his family, and they get a discount here.” My mother said.

“So you’re saying that I’m not going back to the other studio again?” I asked her.

“Correct, you will instead be joining my advanced ballet.” I sighed and knew why she had called me in there.

“I’m the Nutcracker aren’t I?” I asked her.

“Correct again, you will start learning that today.” She said. I nodded. “Go join your new class,” She said. I knew why she was doing this. I was frustrated by it though. I left her office and walked over to where Sarah was helping Ashley with an arabesque.

“Guess who is joining your class,” I whispered in Sarah’s ear.

“You’re joining the class are you? Good for you.” She said.

“I’m playing the Nutcracker,” I said. She suddenly let Ashley, who was balancing on her arm, fall to the floor. I’m pretty sure everyone in the dance studio heard the snap that came from Ashley’s ankle.
