Pink Dress and Pink Lip Gloss

It’s already Wednesday and the last day of school is approaching fast so I’m going out with Jesse today. Just the two of us, one last time before he leaves for college. When that day comes I honestly don’t know what I’ll be like.

I don’t actually know where we are going. He just said that he wanted it to be a big surprise and that I should wait for him to pick me up from my house.

So after school when I get home, I pick out an outfit to wear. I want to look nice. Special. For once in my life anyway, so I put on a nice pink dress – the only one I have – and chuck on some comfortable flat shoes so I’m still able to walk. I never wear make up but I decide to put on some slightly tinted pink lip gloss too.

I never dress up like this but it’s for Jesse so, I want it to be a memory he’ll never forget.

I’m finally done so I just go downstairs and wait.

I turn on the TV and flick through the channels. There’s nothing on so instead, I put on 24. I love it so much it’s unbelievable. I sit there for nearly two and a half hours shouting comments at the TV, of how Jack Bauer is such a BAD-ASS-NINJA-COOL secret agent. When I finally realise the time there’s still no sign of Jesse.

I decide to ring him to see where he is, but I get no answer.

I still wait anyway.

Another half an hour has past, and I’m starting to get bored. JESSE!

I ring him another ten billion times but it just keeps going straight to answer phone. Uhh.

I go upstairs to read in my room for a while.

I start to hear a loud tapping sound on my bedroom window. It doesn’t stop so I head over to take a look. I look down out into my backyard and to my surprise find Jesse throwing stones at the window.

‘What on earth do you think you doing?” I whisper quietly out the window.

“I’ve come to pick you up, Ebony.”

“Don’t you think it’s a bit late, I’m not even allowed out now.”

“Sorry, this surprise was just meant to be for the night. Climb out of the window.”

“What? Now you want me to sneak out through the window?”

“Oh come on. Where’s your sense of adventure?

“Shh. Now that sounds like something I’d say to you.”

He laughs. “Just hurry up.”

I sigh. “Fine then, but I’m telling you now this surprise better be the greatest surprise ever.”

“Oh it will be.”

I roll my eyes at him before quietly tiptoeing over to my wardrobe. I grab a jacket and tuck my phone in my pocket. I start climbing out through the window and down the pipe to where Jesse is standing.

“There. Now where are we going?”

“I’m not telling you.”

I give him my evil eyes.

He doesn’t give in one bit.

“Uhh. Ok can you at least acknowledge how I look?”

He looks at what I’ve bothered to put on for him.

“You look beautiful.” he smiles. “It’s really not necessary though. I assure you.”

“Oh great, so I stuck on a dress and lip gloss for you, and now you tell me it’s not necessary.”

“Don’t worry about it. You always look beautiful anyway.”

He takes my hand and we sneak through the back door.

We walk for ages, and it looks like we’re walking into town, but then we turn to go into the castle grounds.

“Have you any idea where we are going now?”

“No.”

We walk some more and then I see he’s taken me to the lake.

“Ooohh.” It finally clicks in my head.

“You get it now?”

“Uh huh.”

“Right, let’s get in.”

He starts to take off his shoes and jacket.

“What are you doing?”

“I thought you said you got it.”

“I do. I think.” My face turns confused.

“We’re jumping into the lake.”

“Ah. But I’m wearing a dress, it’s like nine o’clock and it’s dark.”

“So, you made me do it. Now I’m making you.”

He signals for me to take off my jacket and shoes and drags me over.

“Who’s going first?” he says.

“Obviously you. I went first last time, remember.” I raise my eyebrows.

He doesn’t argue and jumps straight in.

He comes up from the water.

“Your turn.”

I dive in, and come up above the surface so quickly because it’s so cold.

“Oh my days! It’s unbelievably freezing.”

“Ha! I know. Let’s swim for a bit. We might warm up.”

“Alright.”

We both dive deep down in the lake and mess about splashing, trying to catch each other. Once we had worn ourselves out we decide to get out. As soon as my body hits the open air, it makes me tingle.

We both huddle together like penguins, before we freeze to death, and fall to the ground laughing.

“Wow, that was fun.” I say.

“Yeah.”

He looks into my eyes, and gives me that intense look like he always does.

I look up at the night sky, the bright shining stars.

“It’s beautiful.” I say.

“Just like you.” he says still staring at me.

“Oh shhh.”

“What? I’m just telling the truth. Really Ebony, you don’t truly know how beautiful you are. Everything about you I love.”

“Well, I love everything about you too.” I smile at him sweetly.

“You make me feel like I’m whole. You’re a part of me now Ebony.”

I look at the ground.

He lifts my chin up, and holds my face in his hand.

“I love you so much. There aren’t even words to describe my love for you. Two years ago, if you didn’t invite me out with you, we wouldn’t have been together now. Thanks to you we are.”

Before I say another word he pulls my face in close to his, I close my eyes and I feel his cold lips touch mine.

This kiss is different from the rest. It has more meaning now because I’ll always remember this as the one when we got to spend our last time together before Jesse went to college.

We start to walk back to my house, hand in hand.

When we reach my back door he kisses me on the head, and waits for me to climb back up the pipe and through the window.

I whisper even more quietly now. “Goodnight Jesse. I love you.”

He whispers back. “Goodnight, beautiful.” Then disappears into the night.
