Kingdoms

       

Finally free to decide for her own,

what lovely kingdom to call her home.

A young little serf girl set out on a quest

to find a kingdom that was better than best.

She scoured the land both all day and night

in order to seek and find what she might.

She ran into kingdoms plentiful and many,

but try as she might, couldn't fit into any.

So, this is her tale of joy and sorrow,

as she sought to find a better tomorrow.

She started out in the kingdom to the south;

where she met a king with a foul old mouth.

They roped her in with promises abounding.

Their stories and tales were quite astounding!

She fell for the charm of the kingdom's prince, Loom.

He spoke of riches from the kingdom's treasury room.

He promised her all these wonders and feats.

He told her all of this was something she could keep.

She quickly decided she was in love with this man

and around him, she made all her future plans.

She desperately sought his love and affection.

She tried to embody absolute perfection.

He seemed to take notice of her efforts one day

and invited her to the palace where she could stay.

He treated her well most days, she thought,

but some days, he just simply did not.

She became used to the cycle of love and abuse

and she became quite the recluse.

She hid in her room when he was upset,

hoping to wait out his tirade and threats.

But not every day was quite so intense,

there was plenty of time where joy would commence.

He gave her gifts and spoke of her beauty.

He swore to protect her, as his duty.

She knew he loved her and that he cared.

There was no reason for her to be scared....

One day he reminded her of the riches he kept.

They would all be hers, should she accept.

He promised her a treasure all her own;

equal to the worth of the king's very throne.

If only she would first do something for him.

She thought to herself, 'how simple this whim'.

She would do anything, just to see his delight.

He asked her to come to his room that night.

As she walked down the hallway alone in the dark,

a voice called out to her with a simple remark.

"My dear, where are going? What will you do?"

She answered, "What concern is it to you?"
