Chapter 2: Reappearing Pens & Spiderman

I slugged over to my dad's car dragging my feet. I already suspected a lecture coming on. I hopped in closing the door after me in his big silver truck. I buckled my seat belt and slumped in the backseat, while Hunter plopped in the front. The car was drowned with darkness and I could only see my dads curly blonde hair.

"Zoey what did I say about these kinds of parties? You know I do not like you drinking" he ranted on driving slow like a turtle.

"I wan't even drinking!" I protested making sure I got that point across "It's gross.."

"It's two o'clock in the morning!" he pointed out pulling into the driveway of our house, which was identical to every other house in the neighborhood, and shut the car off since we were only a block away.

"I won't do it again!" I gave up uncoiling my seat belt and flying out of the car making a scene by stomping my feet and slamming doors.

My dad wasn't the best at parenting and giving punishments. He only pointed out the obvious. The only candid parenting I got was always from Hunter, my overprotective brother. I stormed upstairs and before I could shut my door in time, Hunter's foot became a door stop. I threw my head back.

"Here we go.." I mumbled under my breath.

"Look, stay away from that Zane kid. He's nothing but bad news. Got it?" he grabbed my arm tight.

"Got it" I snatched my arm away from his grip and shut the door in his face.

"No kissing either!" Hunter yelled through the door.

"It was nothing!" I yelled back remembering Zane scooting away from me when Hunter came.

Was he embarrassed by the kiss? Maybe he was just drunk and he thought I was someone else. I ripped off my pants and tossed Zane's shirt on the floor. I flicked on the ceiling fan and passed out on top of my covers.

I woke up in the morning to the loudest noise known to man. Or maybe, just to me. Nope, not rocks on my window, but the roar of a machine next door. The lawn mower.

"Keep it down!" I screamed prying open my window.

I saw a blur of tan skin pushing the loud machine and my jaw dropped. Woah, woah, woah. It was Zane. Not just Zane, he was shirtless mowing the lawn. With an eight pack. Grass flung in different directions and the smell lingered in the air. He turned his head and looked at me smiling and waving.

I snarled my lip and snapped the window shut. I noticed a note attached to it and pulled it off. It was written on torn white paper and my purple pen was taped to it.

Hey, I forgot to give you your pen back.

Here's my number

 Zane

His phone number was written in a neat font across the bottom of the paper. Oh gosh, he wasn't giving up.

I slid open my window and yelled at him.

"How did you get this up here?"I squinted my eyes looking down at the ground, far from my second story window

"I used to be in a rock climbing club!" he shouted back cupping his hands and cutting off the engine of the lawn mower.

I rolled my eyes and giggled at him.
