Chapter One:

“I cannot believe I let you talk me into this!” I whisper-yelled at them as we moved around the dark corner and began traveling deeper into the alley.

“Nora, everything is fine. We’ve both been here before, well, not this particular one. But I heard that this one is even better. Only the best of the best get in here.” Mollie smirked.

“Then how did you find out about this place.” I grumbled, Kathryn laughed.

“Nora, Nora, Nora,” Mollie sighs looking over her shoulder at me, “It’s not who you are, as a woman, it’s who you know.” She had stopped in front of a brick wall.

“Well, they gave you the wrong address-” Mollie ran her hand down a small crack just big enough for fingers to fit, then the said brick wall, opened and eyes gazed out at us from the peek hole.

“What do you want?” The gruff voice obviously threatening.

“What all girls want... a little fun.” She said the words as if they meant something special, and they must have because the bricks parted and the man allowed us through. I was shaking my head when Mollie and Kathryn giggled at me.

“First timer,” Mollie smiled teasingly, and I couldn’t deny the fact that my blood was racing with adrenaline; this place was full of possibilities. Here, I felt like someone completely different.

“Come one, let’s go get birthday girl a drink.” Kathryn locked my arm through hers and lead me towards a bar. The bar wasn’t like I thought it would be- on the contrary- it was the complete opposite. The ‘speakeasy’- as Mollie called it- was like one of the fanciest restaurants I’d went to, and I’d been to quite a few. My father was Chief of Police... I can only imagine what he’d do to me if he found out I’d been here.

I swallowed nervously, as Mollie and Katheryn sat on each of my sides. “What can I get you ladies?”

“Burbon for me,” Mollie smiled and pushed her hair back flirtatiously.

“Whisky for me.” Kathryn said, he looked toward me.

    “Oh, uhm-” He smiled.

“First time in a place like this, doll?” He questioned placing my friends drinks in front of them. They were each turned, Mollie talking with a young man and Kathryn chatting with some other girls.

“That obvious?” I whisper, he only smiles before setting the small glass in front of me.

“Sip it.” He offered. I managed a nod and he walked away. I sat staring at the drink, it looked like water. I raised it and took a sniff and wrinkled my nose, against my better judgement I raised it to my lips and sipped the liquid. My throat burned, but I found it oddly... refreshing. I moaned quietly, letting it burn.

“Good, isn’t it?” Kathryn smiled a little, I nod and turn to face the singer. She was black, her voice low and seductive. The band, behind her, playing softly allowing her voice to rise above it in perfect harmony.

Chills ran up my spine and the fine hair on my arms rose- not in fright, but rather in front of awareness. I let my eyes roam trying to find the source. I found him. He was leaning against a wall, surrounded by three other men, but still somehow he had a perfect view of me.

“Good eyes, Nora.” Mollie praised, I blushed.

“I have no idea what you are talking about.” I mumbled picking my glass back up and taking a longer drink.
