                                                          ~Chapter one~

My body shot up in bed, a sharp pain hit my heart; so painful I couldn't scream. The feeling was like someone pulled out half of my heart and burnt it infront of my eyes. My eyes! They stung from the lack of sleep and the bright lights that danced across my room. What were these lights?! I rubbed my eyes as hard as I could; blinking a couple of times my eyes started to adjust to the sudden streams of lights, flashing red and blue. What makes blue and red lights flash?! My two favourite colours, I know emergency vehicles.

Thump, thump, thump! My head shot to the side hearing something down stairs, Thump, thump, thump! There it was again; the sounds of a fist hitting the front door I was sure of it. Curiosity got the best of me and I was soon on my feet heading towards my bedroom door; having to kick away my collection of stuffed unicorns that lay spread across the floor. Okay so I had lied to my father earlier about having a spotless room; cheeky and sneaky. I felt like a total spy, my mother said I'd make an excellent one if only I could stop giggling. And well that would never happen, would it?!

I tip toe towards the stairs hiding among the shadows trying my best not to be seen. At the top of the stairs to the right was an antic coffee table with a lamp on it -- perfect place to stay undercover. I lower my body onto the ground and crawl my way over to it. I was just small enough to fit my body underneath. I settle down and point my ear towards the door trying to hear the voices that were drifting through out the house.

"I'm very sorry sir to come here this late at night," I hear a man say to my father.

"Then why must you bug me?" He asks annoeyed by the people awaking him from his sleep; he has every right to I guess after working non-stop each day to keep us.

"We are here to inform you that Kylie Grahm has been killed in a car accident a few blocks away," another voice chirps up.

"Wait?What?" My father says confused by the information.

"She was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and swerved off the road into the ditch and smashed front on into a tree." The man says making himself more clear.

"Sh-she drinking, drugs no. No, you must of gotten the wrong person." My dad states taken back about the events that had just happened. "I've known her for 16 years, she would never had done any of this."

"We have information that after the divorce she has gone to drugs and alcohol for comfort. We also have information that she was on her way to take the children and leave." The first man speaks up. "Luckily she had crushed--" He was cut off by my father.

"Luckily, luckily. Are you serious? How is any of this lucky?" My dad says angrily.

"Let me finish." The man says again annoeyed. "Luckily she crashed before she had the kids in the car."

I could hear dads soft sobs coming from down stairs. "No, please no." He whimpers when finally realising what had happened.

Hearing my fathers sobs I finally break down into tears trying not to make a sound. I back my body up and move from under the table feet first. My toe gets court on a cord and before I have time to react the lamp comes sliding off the table and smashes into thousands of pieces. Silence comes from down stairs and I only have a moment to move. I crawl out quicker and jump up out of the shadows. As I run off to my room I look back to see my father coming up stairs and two male police man down the bottom of the stairs watching with pain in their eyes.

"Mikky sweetheart, wait." My dad yells out but I don't listen and slam my door shut behind me.

I lock it and curl in front of it crying myself to sleep. My mother, so beautiful, so young, so full of life had just died. Why must this happen to the good people?! Her smile would no longer brighten my days and her laughter wouldn't fill my ears with joy. I could not smile without her, never could I ever.
