Due to his curisioty he went to the great sage Vaishampayana, pupil of Vyasa and requested him to retell the famous epic Mahābhārata. He said that "oh divine being you are the greatest sage of aryavarta, please satisfy my curisioty and tell me the story of my ancestors from the time of Bharata the great to the Kurukshetra war between my great-grandfathers the Pandavas and their paternal cousins the Kauravas". The sage seeing the humblenss and the eagerness of the king agreed to narrate the great epic of Mahabharta to him.

This made king  Janamejaya the listener of the first narration of the Mahābhārata, narrated by Vaishampayana.
