“Don’t. You. Even. Dare,” Adelaide hissed through gritted teeth. “I swear, Tony Stark, if you drop my iPod into that cup I will drop-kick you all the way to China!”

Tony grinned and shook his head, teasingly holding her iPod over his cup of coffee. “Nope! Not unless you tell me where you hid my wallet.”

“Give it, and I’ll tell you,” she said, fake sweetness practically dripping from her words. “All you need to do is hand it over. Now.

Thor sighed loudly. “Son of Howard,” he said, “give the lady back her…pod-thing.”

“Yeah,” Steve Rogers piped up. “We don’t have times for jokes, and Fury’s going to be here soon.”

“See? Thor and Steve agree with me!” Adelaide said, grinning triumphantly.

“Hey!” Tony exclaimed. “What, no one sides with me? No one sides with the genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist?”

Adelaide looked around the table, giving everyone puppy dog eyes.

“Nah,” Bruce Banner, AKA Hulk, said, and Adelaide grinned. She had met Bruce a few days ago, after the incident and the man on the roof, and liked him immediately. He was shy, quiet, and very nice, and acted very protective to Adelaide. If anybody dared to hurt her, they could guarantee an angry Hulk after them.

“I’ll pass,” Clint Barton, or Hawkeye, added. Clint was the best archer Adelaide had ever seen. He had a snarky attitude, and didn’t take no for an answer. Clint wasn’t really Adelaide’s friend yet.

“Whatever,” Natasha Romanov, AKA Black Widow, rolled her eyes. Natasha was…well, not very trustworthy in Adelaide’s book. Natasha was number one spy—other than Clint—in the United States (or even the world), and Adelaide wasn’t sure if it was for SHIELD or the enemy. Natasha wasn’t to be trusted.

Steve Rogers, or Captain America, shrugged. He was big, and lots of muscle, but with the personality of a big teddy bear. Harmless, unless provoked. Then it got nasty. Of course, as soon as Adelaide said a shy “hi” to him, he and Bruce formed a promise to protect her. So, if you even touched her, you’d get an angry Hulk and an angry Captain America after you.

Thor reminded Adelaide like a golden retriever: blond, fluffy, cute, but dumb. You’d have to tell him everything at least three times to get it into his thick head. But, Adelaide didn’t mind. It was amusing watching Thor call iPods “pod-things” and called every man by their last name (“Son of Howard”).

And then there was Tony Stark. The famous Iron Man. Although he got on Adelaide’s nerves sometimes, he was a fatherly figure to her (make that one angry Hulk, one angry Captain America, and one angry Iron Man). They joked and jibbed together like old friends, and bickered like siblings. The pair was inseparable.

Adelaide still hadn’t accepted the idea of her being half-god (half-goddess, whatever), and having supposed powers. It was just too bizarre. She needed some proof, and Nick Fury had assured her she would get the proof she needed soon. Okay, that guy officially creeped Adelaide out. He sort of reminded her of Severus Snape from Harry Potter, with his billowing cape and monotone voice.

“Don’t worry Mom, I’ll be home by Christmas,” Adelaide had joked, saying a final goodbye to her mother after SHIELD was done questioning her.

With tears in her eyes, her mother said, “I know, baby. Just…be safe, okay?”

“I will,” Adelaide had promised, and kissed her mom.
