It's Just Love

In 1975, thirty-three years Bette and Lily had been together
By that time, they knew they'd be forever, but
Lily was admitted to the hospital after a massive stroke
Without rights, Bette was shoved away by her partner's kinfolk
A week later, learned from the obituary that Lily had died
Sobbed on their bed, wishing she could have been by her side

Staring at the reflection, teenage Jonah didn't care for his figure
Often thought about grabbing his dad's gun, pulling the trigger
Appealed to his parents time and again
Explained that he had never been comfortable in his own skin
But they simply shut their ears along with their eyes
Forcing Jonah to be a son, blatantly ignoring his cries

Derek's remains arrived home after he served overseas
Days later, his funeral was infiltrated by unexpected attendees
Waving their signs, shouting words marinated in hate
Supposed churchgoers, spoke of God hating those who weren't straight
Never mind that daily this courageous man risked his life
"Free speech" at the cemetery created additional strife

Paula loved and deemed her mother and mom coolest of the cool
Unfortunately, there were classmates who didn't agree at her school
For no good reason picked on, teased each day
A particular group enjoyed making her their prey
Paula did her best to ignore, keep her head held high
Relieved with the upcoming graduation, she could flip them a goodbye

Marco and Jamal walking hand in hand along the street
Considered themselves halves until they met and were complete
Smiles on their faces vanished upon the first blow
Assaulted by a few disgusted by spotting a man with his beau
Bloody and battered, they lay side by side
Trembling hands moved until their fingers did collide

What is wrong with some of the people in this world?
Not caring an iota about the pain and sorrow they unfurl
Honestly thinking that they have God on their side
Sure, God loves prejudices, violence, and lost souls choosing suicide
Throughout the years, there's been an abundance of unnecessary hate
This is 2014, when will it all finally dissipate?

We're all the same underneath

So much venom, we should rise above
I pray that one day soon

Insults
Abhorrence
Ignorance

Will be eternally replaced with love
