Chapter four

Clearly, Becca couldn't keep her mouth shut. Twice, I had to slap my hand to her mouth to keep her from asking questions. "Will you shut up?" I hissed to her when the others went up to order their food. "Why can't you wait until they've gone so I can tell you?"

"Because I want to know now!" she hissed back, crossing her arms over her chest. "Is this why you left without saying goodbye?"

"Of course it was, Becca," I said, sighing and rubbing my head. "What are you even doing here? Since when did you attend that boarding school?"

"Since when do you wear wigs and pretend to be a boy?" she shot back, smiling.

"You first," I said, dropping my hands and looking at her.

A sigh left her lips as she settled into her chair. "Obviously, I'm used to you just upping and disappearing for weeks, but this time my mum decided it would be wise if I moved to a boarding school. She's been out for business a lot, my dad is always abroad now and you, well, weren't around to help change her mind." I grimaced and opened my mouth to say something. "No, I shouldn't have said it like that. I know you're going through a tough time."

When she was done, she raised her eyebrows expectantly. "My mum started receiving notes again," I told her faintly. "She barely read it before she was applying for places for me to stay for a while. The school knows about the situation and let me stay."

"What's your situation?" Alex asked, sliding into the seat next to his girlfriend and frowning at me. I noticed the way his arm wrapped around Becca in a protective way.

He must really think I'm a guy, I mused as I watched them.

"Nothing," Becca answered for me. "Nothing you have to worry about, babe."

"Are you sure?" he asked, his eyes flicking to mine before landing on Becca again. We both nodded but he still didn't look satisfied.

"Did you guys hear about the party at the pier?" Sean's girlfriend, Lacey, asked. I noticed a small exchange of smiles between Lacey and Becca, like she knew she was helping her out of a tough subject.

"Yeah, it's supposed to be epic," Becca said, rolling her eyes and chuckling. "Don't they say that about every party?"

"They so do!" Lacey said, leaning forward and rolling her thick mascara covered eyes. "But, I suppose it will be epic. It's the end of year party, after all!"

"Don't we still have a few months before it gets even planned?" Sean asked, pulling Lacey against his side and looking at all of us. I couldn't help but stare at them in confusion, what were they even talking about? "Oh, you don't know!" Sean exclaimed, looking at me. "Every year there's a party on the pier, to celebrate the end of the school year. And since this is our final year, it's going to be a big party to send everyone off."

"Oh," I blinked. "Don't they have big send-off parties in most schools?"

Everyone stared at me with a blank expression. "Yeah, Tay," Becca said slowly, looking at me. "But we're boarding school kids, our parties are way better because they're at proper locations and not someone's house!"

I felt my eyes narrow slightly at her tone of voice but I nodded. "Okay. Sounds fun. Excuse me." I got up and headed towards the bathroom. Even though I didn't really need to use the bathroom, I slid down the wall outside the doors; male and female, and right now I couldn't go in either.
