But I love him so

This young woman sits beside me on the sidewalk curb. I can see she is upset. The eyes never lie.

 "Tell me," I said.

"Tell you what?" She tosses her black hair off her shoulders.

My exhale blows a large cloud in the cold morning air. "Tell me why he upsets you so."

"He doesn't upset me." Her bottom lip quivers.

"Of course not. You are dancing in the street with joy."

"It's just that...I just don't know." Tears well up in her eyes.

"But you do know." She turns her head away from me as she embraces her denile.

"Love brings warmth and confidence. Do you feel warm?" I ask.

"No, I don't." Her arms wrap tight around her knees.

"Love brings a smile to your face when you think of him. Do you smile when you think of him?"

 "No, I cry."

"Love brings freedom to be who you are. Are you free?"

"No I'm not. My heart is bonded to him."

It hurts to know you love him and he doesn't love you, doesn't it?"

"How can you say that? Of course he loves me. He loves me very much."

"Tell me how he shows his love for you."

No reply from the girl as wet rivers of tears wash her face. Only sniffles.

I give her a hug. I whisper in her ear.

"Did you see the guy drive by and check you out?"

"What guy?" She brushes the tears away.

"He's gone now. Let's look for the next one."

 "What next one?"

"Silly girl. There is always another one on the horizon. Maybe the next one will be the one who makes you smile and feel warm when you think of him. Maybe the next one will bring you freedom.

Maybe the next one will dance in the street with you.
