Prologue:

[The Werewolf]

“Kai, I don't think this is such a good idea, your father hates me.” Selene frowned up at him, worry clouding her bright blue eyes and Kai felt his insides clench.

“Don't be silly, baby, he loves you, they all do.” The lie fell easily from his lips, but if he had told her the truth she would have demanded that he take her home and he wasn't ready to let her go just yet.

“Really? So I was just imagining the glare he was giving me the last time your mother insisted I come to dinner?” No she hadn't imagined it, but his father was just being overprotective, as usual, that was all. His father only wanted to make sure he chose the right woman for his mate, that was all.

“Of course you were. No one could ever hate you once they got to know you.” The worry eased from her eyes as he wrapped her in his arms, being replaced by an overwhelming need he knew went clear to the soul. Because it was the same need being echoed in his own.”I love you, you know that don't you?”

“You do tell me it everyday.” She giggled, slightly. “I love you too, Kai. I'm just worried.” He didn't want to admit it, he didn't like the dark looming thought, but he was worried as well, he just didn't understand why. Everything in his life was moving along flawlessly, he'd found the woman he wanted to be his mate, he was getting closer and closer to becoming King and it seemed as though every problem he'd ever had was working itself out. So why couldn't he shake the dread from his mind?

“You know, if you had been born a girl you'd be very pretty.” Dani smiled at me, squirming effortlessly from my brother's grasp as he moved to snatch her around the waist. It was nice to see my brother so happy, a little disturbing at times, but nice. “Oh come on Kai, how long are you going to pout? You know it was Liz's idea in the first place, so really I don't see why you're only being pissy with me. Your eyebrows will grow back.”

“My eyebrows shouldn't have to grow back, they shouldn't have been burnt off in the first place.” I should have seen the prank coming, I suppose, but I never really expected Liz to use the candles on my birthday cake to make me pay for cutting a chunk of her hair off. “You do realize that I will be getting revenge for this, don't you?”

Her eyes widen, before narrowing as she puts her hands on her hips and pouts at Farron. “You're going to let him prank me back? Isn't there some kind of rule against that?” Shaking my head, I pour myself a cup of coffee and quickly retreat from the room, before they start arguing and decide to make up. Watching my brother get it on with his wife is really not something I need to see today.

“Hey Kai, you know if you want I could always draw your eyebrows back. I'm sure Dani's gotta marker laying around somewhere.” Liz laughs as soon as I walk into the living room, smirking from behind her magazine. “Of course, if that's not your thing we could go into town and buy you some fake ones, wouldn't want you scaring little David now would we?”
