Prologue: three years ago...

When it all started...

I woke up on my mattress next to my fellow triplets Samuel and Layla, they were both

still sleeping, Samuel was drooling out the side of his mouth and his arm dangled over he bed,

Layla was snoring softly and leaning against the wall behind the bed, a rat scurried across the silent

room causing Samuel to stir and roll over, I got up as quietly as I could and crept to the stair well.

The stairs creaked as I stepped on them, I looked at the clock, one of our most prized possessions, it

was 5:30am, I heard yelling outside, I crept to the small window on the side of our house and

looked out, Mum was fighting with our neighbours again, this time it looked like they were holding

our family dog Kane by his collar, he was barking like mad trying to nip his captor.

Mum was shouting at the neighbour, something that sounded suspiciously like curse words,

the neighbour yelled back and drew his gun, shooting mum in the stomach, I gasped loudly and

heard movement from the attic, "MUM" I yelled and ran out the door in an effort to get to my

mother, "it's over kid" the neighbour said and drew his gun to me, "NO" Samuel shouted, finally

getting out of the house, he drew his bow and arrow at the neighbour ready to shoot, but it was too

late, the neighbour shot me in my right hand, then my left shin, I yelled in pain as Samuel shot the

arrow in our neighbours chest and rushed to me, I saw Layla gathering up Mum, who was severely

bleeding, "her first" I managed to say quietly, Layla fetched our first aid equipment and bandaged

mum up, she had a sort of mist in her eyes and she looked distant, "she's barely got a pulse" Layla

said shakily trying to find out how to fix her, "don't bother" Mum whispered through her pain, "find

the key to the chest and... and..." She drew her last breath and lay down against the grass, "NO,

mummy don't go, please... Please" Layla broke and covered Mum with her body sobbing

hysterically, "MUUUUM" she wailed.

I managed to look over at the now dead neighbour across the fence, Samuel bandaged my hand and

shin but could not get the bullet out of the wounds.
