Jason stood watching from the side, his daughter, alone, with a look of feigned indifference on her face. Tears filled his eyes as he watched her open her car door again, reaching for another object, a smaller one, a green iPod. His iPod. Desiree threw hers back in the car and plugged in her headphones to Jason's. She smiled slightly as the first song came on, though he had a slight idea it was Evanescene, the way she suddenly took a deep breath and bit her lip, running a hand through her hair.

He would give anything, anything, to be able to take the pain away from her, to tell her that he was still with her. But she'd already been assigned a guardian angel, one who was alive, who could hold her and comfort her.

And that would have to do.

                                                                Desiree's POV

After grabbing my dad's iPod, I put it on shuffle, waiting to see what song, out of 1482 songs, would come on.  Of course, it couldn't be one of his happy, old-timey country ones that I loved to death, though I would never admit it to anyone else, it had to be Evanescence. I bit back all the emotions threathening to wash over me as I put the iPod in my back pocket and ran a hand through my hair.

I opened the back door, grabbing my backpack. I threw it over my shoulders, and then stuck my hands in my pockets after shutting the door. I stood looking up at the new school, letting out a long breath my counseler had once told me to try, to calm myself down.

After doing that, and then counting to ten a few times, I finally got the courage to take the step towards my new school, slowly, but surely.

I walked in, keeping my head down as I walked into the office, ignoring all the stares, knowing what they were thinking. Who's the new chick with that weird hat? Like they'd even make an effort to talk to me, ever.

For some of these people, my name would only be 'new girl' and it would stay that way until I did something that caused people to know who I was.

I looked up at the secretary, who was smiling at me. "Hello." She said in her cheerful voice, but it didn't irritate me, she reminded me of the one at my old school, always cracking jokes and trying to make you feel better.

"Hi." I smiled softly back at her, keeping my hands in my pockets. "It's my first day of school, and I kind of need a schedule.

"Of corse, I'd love to give it to you, but I need some infromation first, like your name." She joked with me.

"Desiree Fontaine." I replied quietly, reaching foward and taking my schedule as she handed it to me.

"In grade 11, I see. Hmm." The secretary scanned the room, looking for somebody or something, I guess. Her face lit up in a bright smile as she saw what she was looking for. "Hey, Camille." She called.

A beautiful girl with long blonde hair turned around to look at the secretary, narrowing her eyes. "I'm not showing the new girl around." She spat, and I cringed as I heard the venom in her voice,  but then I quickly recovered, standing a little straighter.

"I have a name, it's very simple to say. I mean, I suppose you could pronounce Desiree easily, unless it just takes to much time out of your day to do that." I said with a shrug, smirking slightly, and Camille turned her glare to me, but then smiling sweetly.

"I apologize, Desiree," she said this polietly, but I could tell she was angered by the look in her eyes, "I would love to show you around." She added a smile to the end of the sentence, walking towards me. "Follow me." She said, walking out of the office.

I did follow her, though reluctantly. As soon as we were away from the office, she turned her glare to me again. "Listen, new girl. Don't ever speak to me again, and stay out of my way. Okay, great." She rolled her eyes as she stalked away from me, toward her group of hussies, I presume, and I stood there, shaking my head.

Yeah, I could tell this year was going to be terrible.
