My eyes felt heavy as they fluttered open. I felt warm and comfortable as I glanced around at my surroundings. I didn’t recognize the bedroom until I remembered all that had occurred. All that Alexander had done. Instinctively I reached up and touched my neck, but found no marks. How?

I also saw that Jace was nowhere to be found. His side of the bed was empty. Sitting up, I clutched the sheet to my body and let out a sigh.

I can’t believe what happened. Alexander is working with hunters—with Cameron—in order to take Jace down? Since when did they become best friends? And where the hell have Caleb and Nick been?

Do they know that a shit storm is about to hit?

I couldn’t help but think about how vulnerable Jace had been, the way he turned to me in his darkest hour. I felt so incredibly close to him, and I never thought that would have been possible. The brutality they had against Jace’s men…vampires are not the savages, Cameron and the rest of those assholes are.

It makes me almost sick to my stomach knowing that I dated someone like Cameron. I mean sure, he could be a dick when he didn’t get what he wanted, but I had no idea he was capable of such…cruelty. It’s disgusting.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by Jace’s voice. It sounded as though he was talking to someone, as I stared at the door expectantly. There was a pause. “You don’t understand me; I need man power immediately. What part of slaughtered don’t you understand?” His voice sounded edgy.

I inhaled sharply. He did not sound happy.

There was a pause. “They fucking decapitated Renaldo. And they staked Dimitri! Do you understand?! This is a war, not a little game anymore. Alexander has committed treachery against his own kingdom. That will not be tolerated. They need to be taken out. All of them.” Silence quickly followed. “Good. See you soon.”

With that, the conversation was over. I could hear his footsteps approach the door, as he quietly opened it. I stared at Jace with wide eyes, fear overcoming me. “A war?” My voice seemed to echo, shock evident.

He sighed, closing the door behind him. He was shirtless with his jeans hanging loosely on his hips, which normally would have drove me wild but not this time. I heard the words “war” and “taken out,” and now I was panicking.

“Melinda it’s going to be alright.” He said, clearly sensing my concern. He moved towards me, his dark eyes intensely taking me in. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

I scoffed. “I’m not worried about me Jace, I’m worried about you! They want to kill you! How can you expect me to be calm about all that?” I exclaimed, hysteria rising in my tone.

He sat down beside me, reaching out and taking my hand. “I have a whole army, Melinda. They have a few pathetic hunters on their side.”

“A few pathetic hunters that managed to kill some of your closest friends and allies.” I pointed out softly. As the words left my mouth, I could feel Jace staring intensely at me. I swallowed hard. “I’m scared, Jace. I love you and I don’t…I won’t lose you."
