We'll Be Together Again

Prologue

“Come on Ari sweetie, we’re leaving.” I heard my mother call from outside.

My father got a new job in California since he got fired at the one here in Vancouver, my hometown. My mom said that we’re all going to have to go with him because we’re all a family and family always stick together. As she says.

I’ve told her a number of times that I didn’t want to leave, because we’ll be leaving behind our home, the people and most importantly my best friend Charlie. I’ve known Charlie since birth and till then, we were inseparable.

“I don’t want to leave, I don’t want to leave,” I chanted as I held onto Charlie’s leg from inside the kitchen.

“I don’t want you to leave to leave too, but mommy says you’re going to come back,” Charlie said looking down at me with his bright blue eyes as he gave me a warm smile.

“I don’t want to leave at all!” I demanded and held onto Charlie’s leg tighter.

“Arielle Samantha Lowe, we’re leaving now!” My mother shouted.

“Wait, I’ll be right back,” Charlie said, peeling me off his leg and running off somewhere.

“No, don’t leave me; she’s going to take me,”

2 seconds later, Charlie came back with something behind his back. “Close your eyes,” He said and I did as he told. “Now take out your hands,” I obeyed and I felt something placed into my hand.

I opened my eyes and looked at what’s in my hands. I saw a photo frame with a picture of Charlie and me in the backyard after a water fight. “I can’t keep this, this is yours,”

“Keep it; I don’t want you to forget me,”

“I will never forget you,”

“Arielle, don’t make me take your Barbie doll off you,”

“Go now, before your mum takes your precious Barbie doll off you,” I heard Charlie laugh quietly to himself. He gave me a quick kiss on the lips and ushered me out the door as I felt heat starting to rise up in my cheeks. “We’ll be together again.” Was the last I heard of him.

My mom was standing by the car tapping her foot impatiently. “Let’s go, or else we’re going to miss our flight.” She scolded and grabbed me by the arm and put me in the car, buckling me to the seat.

She got into the passenger seat and my father was already in the driver’s seat. He started the car and we were off. I turned around from my seat and saw Charlie waving. The longer I looked; I saw his figure disappearing into the background until I couldn’t see him.

“We’ll be together again,” I whispered to myself.
