Lullaby
You're holding in your hands
A doll-like baby girl
Even though she's minutes old
She's more precious than a pearl
You think about her future
All that she'll become
A tear falls from your eye
As you slowly start to hum
She reaches up her hand to you
And tries to grab your chin
It's her special way of telling you
What's going on within:
Now, now daddy
Don't you cry
I don't need
No lullaby
I just need
To feel secure
And need to know
You're there for sure
----------
She holds on to your hand
As she leads you to a chair
Her plastic crown looks perfect
In her golden hair
She tells you you're her king
As you sip your "tea"
A tear falls from your eye
But you don't want her to see
And though you try to hide it
You hum anyway
You know she's only 5
But she knows just what to say:
Now, now daddy
Don't you cry
I don't need
No lullaby
I need you
To be my king
And stay with me
Through anything
----------
She stomps upstairs dramatically
Yelling all the way
She's 13 now and you don't know
What to do or say
You sneak up a little later
To see if she's alright
You find her sleeping on her bed
Worn out from the last fight
You sit down on her bed
But really, she's awake
She feels your tears and hears you hum
It's more than she can take
Now, now daddy
Don't you cry
I don't need
No lullaby
I need you to
Let me try
