We walked out of my house, heading toward a shiny limo parking not far away. There were several other cars with vampire guards standing outside. Then my mother emerged from the car. And we rushed toward each other.

"Mom!" I cried, running into her waiting arms. We hugged and I started to cry like I was five again, but all my fear and worries had rolled off my chest. Mom was safe at last. I couldn't bear the thought of losing her. I wasn't going to lose anyone in my life again.

"I'm alright, honey," Mom gently rubbed my back, "I'm sorry I made you that worried."

Then another man crawled out from the other side of the limo. I recognized him immediately. Dimitri came around, smiling at me. I released Mom and bared my teeth at him.

"You kidnapped my mom?" I snarled.

"Honey, don't be rude," Mom hushed me. "Lord Dimitri was your father's best friend. He just came to meet you and me."

"Excuse me?" I said, turning to look at my mom.

"I have a strong sense of responsibility to protect you, your highness," Dimitri said with a bow.

"What?" I asked again, still suspicious with this guy. I guess it was because the last time Octavia and I had tried to meet him; his bodyguards almost finished us for dinner. Needless to say, I wasn't so keyed up to see him again.

"You're just a strong replica of your father," he mused. "Such a strong young lady."

"Don't change the subject," I said.

"Vivienne," Mom said with a warning look.

"Young half-blood, I'm here because the Royal Council has been investigating your existence," he simply replied. "And most importantly, I have promised your father to look after you, little one."

"How could I trust you?" I said. "The last time I went to you, your guards almost killed me."

"I have already punished them for their disrespect, my dear," Dimitri said. "It was just a misunderstanding. They didn't know who you are. But if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have known it was you."

"What do you mean?"

"Who else could take down the true-bloods like that?"

Then he turned to his bodyguards with a look. A few familiar guys came forward timidly and placed their hands over their chests.

"We ask for your forgiveness, your highness," one of them who I remember was a tuxedo guy said. His head still bowed, "We will do whatever it takes to protect you."

"Oh really?" I asked sarcastically.

"Viv, that's enough," Mom said.

"Alright," Dimitri puffed his chest and extended his arms to me, "I'm just so glad you're still alive and kicking, literally...but wouldn't you mind giving me a bear hug or something?"

I looked at him with a scorn.

"Okay, never mind," he said and dropped his hands to his sides again. "Living too long might have damaged my sense of humor."

I heard Alyssa snickered from behind.

"Anyway," the lord continued with a bright smile, "I've come here to ask you for a favor."

"A favor?" I narrowed my eyes at him again.

"Yes, I want you to stay in your school and keep yourself safe there," he said. "I have prepared the guards to watch over your mom. If there's anything stir up in the Underworld, you'll be informed, but don't ever get out of school again, promise?"
