To James Black she was always the woman. Seldom heard him mentioned her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipsed and dominated the whole of her sex. It wasn't expected that he felt any emotion akin to love for Cassandra Pearce. All emotions, especially love, were abhorrent to his cold, vicious, cruel minds. He was the most perfect killer and beast that the world had seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position.

To welcome such intrusions into his havoc and cruel life might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. He never felt the softer passions, his finely adjusted temperaments blocking him from the feelings of that particularly emotion we called love. Anger and rage were his nature, the opposite of gentle and affection. Forbid him to get an inkling of what love can be.

And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman is Cassandra Pearce. Declare his love to a wedding vow, dedicate his life to a fairy woman he claim to love. But even a marriage can't shield them from God's willingness to play them apart.

Because even the happy ending has come to an end as well . . .
