I woke up to a pounding on the door, so I got up sluggishly and opened it. Diego came into the room holding a folded paper and a duffel bag. He sat on the armchair across the beds and sighed heavily.

“Damn, it’s so hot!” he said wiping the sweat from his forehead. “ I can’t wait for winter.”

I lit up a cigarette, “What winter? We live in El Paso Texas. There is no fuckin’ winter.”

“Well it’s not so damn hot then, hey gimme one!”

I threw him the cigarette box and looked at the paper in his hands. “What is that?”

He threw me the duffel bag and I caught it with both hands. “That’s the money from the Italian job,” he smirked.

I held the bag with one hand and it was pretty heavy, but not heavy enough. “That’s not all of it right?” I asked while unzipping the bag.

“That’s just Araina’s half,” he said with an exhale of smoke.

I zipped the bag up, and put it on the floor.

“And this!” Diego said holding up the folded paper. “It took me all night but,” he got up from the chair and gave me the paper, “I found one of them.”

I unfolded the paper and saw a mug shot of a big guy and the name under it, Rico Santoya.

“Are you sure this is him?” I asked intently.

“Positive.” Deigo said before taking a drag on his cigarette.

I looked at the mug shot and then at Ariana’s sleeping peacefully on the bed. Her lips parted slightly and hair tangled, she looked serene and luring. I wanted her to feel safe and protected.

I wanted to kill Rico Santoya.

My vengeful thoughts multiplied as my gaze lingered, and her eyes slowly opened. She sat up and ran her fingers through her long brown hair. She looked at me, “What time is it?” she asked in a groggy voice.

“About noon.” I said looking away from her.

She got up from the bed, walked over to the bathroom and closed the door behind her. My eyes lingered on the bathroom door unintentionally as my head swarmed with thoughts of her again. I turned to Diego looking at me suspiciously as he inhaled his cigarette.

“This has to do with her,” he said in a more serious tone.

Callete, ella no sabe.” I said in my deep voice.

(Be quiet, she doesn’t know.)

“Por que no se lo dices?” Diego asked.

(Why don’t you tell her?)

No queiro que ella sepa.”

( I don’t want her to know)

“Que escondes, Javier?” he said his voice getting louder.

(What are you hiding, Javier?)

I turned to look at him angrily, “Nada! Solo tienes que dejar en paz!”  I said with my voice also rising.

(Nothing! Just leave it alone!)

It was quiet for a while until, “You care about her.”

“Diego, don’t…” I said angrily.
