Chapter 2

After training for about an hour or two, I began to get hungry. I headed back to my room to change into jeans and a red tank top before heading to the cafeteria.

I get to the cafeteria and get in the food line. I grab a plate and fill it with five doughnuts. I look around for a vacant table and I find one that is near the window. Just as I sit down on the chair and place the plate on the table, Maya appeared and sat across from me with a big smile plastered on her face.

I raise my eyebrow at her, grab a doughnut and bite into it. After I swallow, I ask her, "What are you smiling about?" She exclaims, "We're going shopping!" I blink at her and shove the rest of the doughnut into my mouth. I chew and swallen then say, "Shopping?" I ask, "Who's going?" Then I pick up another doughnut and begin to eat it.

I watch Maya tap her chin as I eat. She then tells me, "Leanne, Nikolai, 2 Guardians, you, me... oh and a guy named Rien. You might have not met him before."

My eyes widen at the mention of Rien's name and I slightly choke on the doughnut that I'm eating. Maya raises an eyebrow at me as I pound my chest with my hand to get the doughnut to go down. When I stopped choking, I let out a breath. "Thanks for helping me stop choking..." I mumble. She ignores what I just said and asks, "Have you met him?" I nod and say, "Yeah, met him at the gym." All Maya could say was, "Ohh..."

I lean back into my chair and finish off my plate of doughnuts. Once I was done, Maya stands up and tells me, "Come on. We're meeting them at the academy parking lot." I nod and stand up as well. "Let's go."

Maya and I leave the cafeteria and head to the parking lot.

Once we got there, everybody who was going were already there. Everybody, except for Rien, were standing in front of an SUV. Rien was leaning against what seemed to be his car.

When Leanne saw us, she smiled and waved. I did the same. She then says to everybody, "Okay! Let's get going!" The two Guardians get into the driver and passenger seat, then Leanne and Nikolai get in, followed by Maya.

I looked at the car and was about to get in but a hand on my shoulder stopped me. I turn to Rien who had stopped me from getting in and raise an eyebrow at him. "Yes? Is there something that you need?"

He looks at me with a smile and says, "Ride in my car, so that I won't feel so lonely." I look at him and was about to say that I didn't want to but Maya whispers to me, "Just go. You don't want him to be lonely, do you?"

I think about it, Do I want him to be lonely? That'll just be sad if I left him alone...

I sigh and say to Rien, "Fine. I'll ride with you in your car." He grins, takes a hold of my arm and pulls me towards his car. I scowl slightly when Maya says, "Have fun you two!" I look at her and childishly stick my tongue out at her. She just grins and waves at me.

Rien opens the passenger seat door for me. I get in and mutter, "Thanks." He flashes me a smile, closes the door and gets into the drivers seat. He starts the car engine and we stay quiet. Talk about awkward... We look at the SUV in front of us and when it begins to drive off, we follow right behind it.

We remained quiet for the whole entire drive to the mall. It was very awkward. A few minutes later we arrived and Rien parked the car next to the SUV. We both get out and go over to the others who are waiting for us at the entrance of the mall.

Maya links her arms with mine and Leanne's then we all go into the mall.

After a few hours of shopping, we all (except the two Guardians) had at least 3 shopping bags in our hands. We all headed back to the parking lot. Rien and I put our shopping bags into his car (since I was apparently going to be riding with him again) and the others put theirs into the SUV.

I look at the sky and get slightly worried. Shopping had taken longer than we intended because the sun had set and it was dark enough so that strigoi could be lurking about outdoors.

The others had already got in the SUV and I went over to the Guardian driving and said that we needed to go back fast cause there could be strigoi around. Just as the Guardian nodded and started the engine, the other Guardian that was in the passenger seat was pulled out of the SUV. I went to the other side of the SUV and see 4 strigoi standing there. One of them holding the Guardian.

I grit my teeth and pull my stake out. I run at the strigoi holding the Guardian and stake it. The Guardian moves himself away from the dead strigoi and stakes one of the remaining three strigois.

Two down, two to go.

I glance at the SUV and then at the two strigoi. I turn to the Guardian and say, "Leave now. I can handle this." The Guardian looks at me and hesitates but then nods. He gets into the SUV and I look at Leanne, Maya and Nikolai. I give them a small smile and wave at them as they drive off, heading back to the academy.

I sigh and look at the two strigoi. Time to see if training has paid off... They were both male and they looked strong. I get into a fighting stance and they both attack me. I manage to dodge one of them but the other one manages to scratch me across the stomach.

I grit my teeth from pain and place a hand on my now bleeding stomach. The strigoi that scratched me then grabs me. I struggle in his hold but I wasn't able to break free. Then he sinks his fangs into my neck. My eyes widen as he drinks my blood. I feel the endorphins enter my system and I feel slightly dazed. Then suddenly, the strigoi drinking from me gets pulled away from me and I blink in confusion. I then hear the strigoi yell in pain and I turn my head to see what just happened.

I see Rien pulling his stake out of the strigoi and the other strigoi staring at Rien with anger for killing his comrade. My vision becomes blurry and my legs begin to wobble. I blink my eyes trying to focus them.

When I was able to focus my eyes slightly, I was able to see that Rien had gotten injured but was able to stake the last strigoi. I let out a relieved breath and my legs just couldn't support me anymore, they gave way from under me causing me to fall backwards. I close my eyes waiting to hit the ground. But instead of hitting the ground, I feel strong arms wrap around my waist. Then next thing I know is that I'm being carried.

I open my eyes and I look at Rien who is looking at me with worried eyes. I give him a small smile, hopefully it was reassuring. He places me gently in the passenger seat of his car and he gets in. He looks at me and starts the engine. As he drives back to the academy, I'm unable to keep my eyes open anymore and drift off into darkness.
