Chapter 1

The strangest part about being in a coma, although I didn't know I was in one at the time, is that you don't remember anything concerning it at all, at least not until the conclusion. It's a profound sleep, and no matter how earsplitting the alarm clock is, you're not awakening any time soon, that's for sure.

I guess you could say it was peaceful though.

However, the more you gain consciousness, the more I wished I could open my eyes and talk. It was like I was paralyzed, but I could still hear the voices surrounding me, and people prodding at my body. It got really bothersome after a while. My eyelids felt so heavy that I couldn't open them. My body felt numb, like I was in so much pain that I was just trying to block everything out.

I tried to move anything for as long as I could, before giving up and letting my dreams take over my mind, drifting my thoughts away to something much better.

And then there was that annoying beeping noise. It was constant and never-ending. I couldn't tell if it was coming from my bedroom or if I was just making it up. Eventually I decided it was definitely there, and more irritating than anything else.

I didn't know exactly how much time it took, but I knew it had been really extensive, or at least it seemed like it for me. I was finally able to shift my body. I rested my hand on my wrist, feeling a cord attached to it. Confused, I yanked at the cord. I kept fidgeting with it, as it wouldn't move, before a cool hand clamped down on mine locking it in place.

"Stop doing that." The voice said, stern and aware.

The voice was deep and unrecognizable. Who was in my room? He placed my hands back at my sides.

"She's awake." He said again, after adjusting the blankets on the bed, which were wrapped around me. What was he doing? "Call Dr. Reynolds in here. We need to see if there are any vital signs."

My eyes snapped open. A man was leaning over me, adjusting some wires. I couldn't help but noticed he wasn't bad looking. In fact, he looked like an angel.

No, I thought mentally. That's not possible, Charlie. You're not dead....Right?

His light brown hair was short and messy, hanging over his eyes. I couldn't look past his eyes. They were crystal blue, and beautiful. I didn't realize I had been gawking until he began to smirk.

"Hi Charlie," He said, before leaning back over to sit on a metal stool placed to the side of my bed.

"It's nice to finally meet you, and see something other then the back of your eyelids. You don't even realize how long it took."

Who was this strange, handsome man? I was confused, and didn't know what to say.

"Who are you?" I asked, eyeing him up and down. I looked around the room, finally seeing the stark white walls, few furniture, and the white curtains blocking the sun coming from the only window. To my right, was a blue curtain, which separated me from the other half of the room. Only then did I finally take in the horrible smell of the place. I couldn't quite put a name to it, but it did contain a hint of a lemon-scented cleaning supply overdose.

"I'm Nate." He said politely, and grinned at me, his lips curving upwards, "I'm your nurse."

I couldn't help but stare at him. His face was flawless, the kind you only see in magazines, much less then a hospital.

"But I know what you're thinking, so you don't have to say it." He continued on. I blushed, hoping he didn't actually know what I had been thinking.
