The Wolf Prince | Chapter One

Today is a day of celebration.

For most the wolf bound anyway. I however, don't celebrate. Why should I? Who the hell wants to celebrate the worst years of their life?

Today every pack celebrates the children of the kidnappings and their safe arrival home. I don't celebrate because I was one of the five kidnapped. I was one of the five children tortured and beaten. Although I can't recall any memories from my kidnapping.

My father found me on the snow glossed forest floor near the boarder of our packs territory. I was alone, disposed in the obscurity of the night left beaten and bloody. I can't remember a single event that occurred in the time my captor imprisoned me nor could I remember who it was. I can't recall any distinct details other than the pitiless beatings. But that didn't matter because my kidnapper revealed himself none the less. He didn't turn himself into The Crown, no, after he dumped each of the five children along the boarder to the territory they belonged to he stapled a note to them. All of them read the same words:

Pounding hearts,

Way off the charts.

They bare a mark,

Thou resemble the dark.

States the claim,

Wolf Fires name.

Unstoppable beings,

Too wild to tame.

For who dares to provoke them,

Shall be claimed.

It was like some sick joke, and The Crown couldn't make sense of it. The identical poems attached to each of the returned heirs were taken as a threat. And they knew exactly who imposed that threat and who the kidnapper was because he signed the poem in blood lettering. My kidnapper was Gavin Kade, leader of the Glassmeadows pack. Gavin was a face and member of The Crown, a circle of Alpha's who come together under the presence of the Wolf Prince to discuss treaties and issues between packs. This beloved leader, partner to The Crown was instantly viewed as a loathed enemy.

Today is not only the anniversary of the day my father, Alpha of the Whispering Pines pack, found me, but the day he avenged my kidnapping. My father killed Gavin Kade. Thus being why I don't celebrate my return home. I celebrate the death of a kidnapper, traitor, and a monster.

I was ten when my father found me. I had been ripped apart from my family for a solid ten years. For ten years I was confined in a stranger's home among other kidnapped strangers. And the strange thing is, none of the kidnapped children could quite remember what happened when we were held captive.

"I'm not ready."

Those were the first words that stumbled from my lips when my father told me he was retiring as Alpha. I watched my father, wide eyed and ready for an argument as he was sitting relaxed in his study, his boots propped up on his desk as he read from a timeworn journal.

"Your right, your not," my fathers muffled voice came from behind the journal. Not bothering to spare me a glance.

"Exactly," I affirm, holding onto the fact that he actually agreed with me without a second thought. "How am I supposed to step up as leader of this pack, as Alpha once you step down if I can't even shift into a wolf bound?" I add, raising my eyebrows in question.

He peers up at me from behind his journal, analyzing my arguing statement. "That is one reason why you're not ready but that problem will be overturned in just a short sleep, you will be 18 tomorrow and you'll be able to shift into a wolf bound." And with that being said he brushed that concern right off the table, looked down at his journal and served up a new one.

"What I am concerned about is the fact that The Crown doesn't know a single thing about you other than your kidnapping. You haven't been responsible by going to The Crown meetings with me like you should be. It's your responsibility to know what's going on between packs; it's your duty to know what treaties are still in commission and what has been diminished." He turned a page. "That is my concern."

I slump back in my chair, my body relaxing and releasing its tension. "Fine," I grumble. "I'll go to the next meeting held by The Crown," I give in.

"The meetings are never held by The Crown. The Crown is simply invited to the meetings, merely contributing their thoughts and ideas. The wolf Prince is the host to the meetings; he decides what laws pass and the laws that don't." My father says, scolding me as he stands and crosses his study toward the door.

"Sorry," I mumble, hardly audible to my own ears.

"You will go, and you will meet the wolf bound prince," he says, crossing the threshold as I trail behind.

"And what if he doesn't approve, what if he doesn't like me?" I worry, anxiously trying to catch up with his quick pace.

"He will. Besides he will be new to all of this, as you will be." He says waving a dismissive had. We walk through the corridors of closed wooden doors to the back exit of the pack house. Stepping outside behind him my brows furrow questionably.

"What do you mean he will be new?" I ask steadily glancing around the yard at the scene of wolf bound warriors from our pack training, practicing fighting techniques. Most in wolf bound form, others in human.

He stopped, turning to me and placing a strong hand on my shoulder, looking me dead in the eyes he says, "I mean, the prince has just been murdered, Shira, he was murdered in the precise hateful way your mother was. Prince Reid only has one son; he is the only heir to the throne. His son will be dubbed as Prince at the next meeting with The Crown." My father's aged, pale blue eyes leave mine. Removing his hand from my stiff shoulder he turns toward his loyal pack. With his back to me he shouts from over his shoulder, "Until then we will only worry about what is to come on your birthday."
