The Audi R8 Was Named After Audi's Champion Sportscar, the Audi R8 LMP
In the early 2000s, Audi was at the top of its racing game with their champion sportscar, the Audi R8 LMP (LMP meaning "Le Mans Prototype"). It had won five consecutive 24-hour races at Le Mans, winning five out of the six times the car was entered. Those wins were special to Audi, and it wanted to remember those occasions by making the Audi R8 a household name. It was then that. And thus, the Audi R8 was born. Audi could have easily named it the R9, but it wouldn't have had the same effect or clout that 'R8' brings to the table.
