Symptoms:
The symptoms of hemlock poisoning often begin with trembling gastric pains, increased salivation, muscle weakness, rapid heart rate and loss of speech followed by convulsions, paralysis, central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, asphyxiation, blindness, coma and death

Toxic Effects:
The coniine alkaloid fountain hemlock has the same structural make-up as nicotine; it disrupts the mechanism of the central nervous system by acting on the nicotine acetylcholine receptors. It can also block impulse transmission to the muscles which leads to paralysis of the respiratory muscles and lack of oxygen to the heart and brain. Because this alkaloid is present in every part of the hemlock, even touching the plant may cause a skin reaction to some people. Treatment:
There is no antidote for hemlock poisoning but pumping the stomach shortly after it is ingested may prevent serious symptoms from appearing. Otherwise the drug diazepam may be given for convulsions.
