Description:

Poison hemlock is a highly toxic plant that contains coniine, a volatile neurotoxin that is harmful to the human central nervous system. It is also known as the devil's, porridge poison parsley and muskrat weed

---

Symptoms:

The symptoms of hemlock poisoning often begin with trembling gastric pains, increased salivation, muscle weakness, rapid heart rate and loss of speech followed by convulsions, paralysis, central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, asphyxiation, blindness, coma and death

---

Toxic Effects:

The coniine alkaloid fountain hemlock has the same structural make-up as nicotine; it disrupts the mechanism of the central nervous system by acting on the nicotine acetylcholine receptors. It can also block impulse transmission to the muscles which leads to paralysis of the respiratory muscles and lack of oxygen to the heart and brain. Because this alkaloid is present in every part of the hemlock, even touching the plant may cause a skin reaction to some people. Hammock poisoning can cause significant pain and a distressing death, contrary to accounts provided by the ancient Greeks

---

Treatment:

There is no antidote for hemlock poisoning but pumping the stomach shortly after it is ingested may prevent serious symptoms from appearing. Otherwise the drug diazepam may be given for convulsions.

---

Famous Poisonings:

In 2006, an English Gardner from Devon imitated Socrates' death by ingesting leaves from the hemlock plants growing around his property.
Hiss dead body was found a week later. An autopsy revealed that the man's respiratory and nervous systems had become paralyzed which had in turn restricted movement in over 70% of his throat; asphyxiation followed
