Chapter Seventeen

[Y/N POV]

We reach a fence.

"Come on, are you kidding me?!" Darius whines loudly.

"Great! The park's only intact fence!" Kenji groans, as we all turn on our feet and hide behind some crates.

"I told you she'd get it the way!" Yasmina hisses at us angrily, pointing at Bumpy. "If it wasn't for her, I could have made the van."

"And then you would have been eaten." Ben throws back. "Bumpy saved your life."

"Why couldn't you just leave her behind?!" She whisper-shouts.

"Because Ben and I wouldn't abandon her like we were abandoned!" I burst out in anger, having enough of Yaz's snark and sarcasm.

Bumpy groans and nuzzles me, and my angry face softens at her nudge. Ben sighs, his shoulders slumping, and Yasmina falls quiet.

"Ben's right. We're on our own." Darius says in a giving-up tone.

Not that far off, the Indominus gives another screeching roar, and I yelp.

Darius tries to peek out, but what he sees makes him duck back down.

Then a snarl reaches my ear, and I bury my face in Ben's chest. He wraps one arm around me, and one around Bumpy. I feel him trembling.

We all stay quiet, but Bumpy has other plans. She starts to squeal in agitation. Darius, Ben, and I try to calm her down with no luck.

The Indominus gets aware of our presence and he stomps near us. Thankfully, we crawl away in time.

I spot the truck in the distance. Darius nods at me and gestures for the others to move, but they shake their heads in fear.

"Trust us." I whisper to them.

Darius throws a rock at one of the canisters, and the Indominus gets distracted by the sound. It rushes to that direction and we make a run for it, sprinting towards to the van in silence.

But then I trip and fall with a loud grunt, and the Indominus hears me.

We all scream and the others run, but Ben and Kenji dash back to me and help me struggle to the van as the white hybrid chases us.

All of our seatbelts are clicked, and Yasmina hops to the driver's seat. "I'm driving," she declares and starts the engine as Bumpy climbs in the van.

The vehicle drives away. Our pants fill the air.

Meanwhile, the Indominus gives us one last roar, before giving up and stomping away.

I let out a small laugh, followed by a grunt of pain as my leg gives a particularly sharp sting.

"Are you okay?" Ben asks me quietly and I nod.

"Yes, thanks to you and Kenji." I smile at the two boys, and they grin back.

"Whew!" Darius chuckles.

Bumpy squeals happily, and I rub her.

"Yeah!" Kenji pumps his fist.

"Kids?" We hear Roxie's voice from the walkie-talkie. "Come on. Pick up! There's something going on. Stay at camp. We're heading to you."

"No, we're heading to you!" I say, putting emphasis on the two words for clarity.

"Y/N? Wait, why are you--?"

"We're fine but we had to leave camp." Darius says. "Although, Y/N broke her leg."

"What?"

"I'll manage!" I holler to the gadget.

"Long story!" Darius says.

"Short story: a dinosaur ate camp." Yasmina summarizes.

"Shorter story! epic leader Kenji somehow got everyone out safely."

I chuckle at the smug look on his face, and he flashes me a smile.

I'm beginning to realize that Kenji's not that bad after all. He just has a sky-high ego sometimes.

"And then we found a van, and Bumpy!" Ben grins happily.

The baby Ankylosaurus squeals.

"We're cutting through the jungle and heading to the main park. Should be there soon." I finish, and Darius turns the walkie-talkie off.

"We're getting out of here!" he cheers.

"Yeah! You hear that Bumps?" I stroke the baby, and give Ben a high five.

"Whoo! Driver en route." Yasmina says.

Kenji sighs. "Good job not getting me eaten, bro." he leans back and tells Darius.

"Thanks, 'brah' " Darius clicks his tongue twice, and I suppress a laugh.

"Oh no, you-- you made that sound weird. No more bro talk for you." Kenji smirks.

Brooklyn holds out a hand for Sammy to high-five, and Sammy gives a happy and relieved laugh.

"We did it camp family! And not a moment too--"

I severe bump on the road cuts Sammy's exclamation off, and we all grunt as the van shakes, our bodies lurching back and forth from inertia.

A small pink phone falls out of Sammy's jean pockets and my eyes grow wide.

"My phone! I knew it!" Brooklyn stamps her foot on the car, and scowls at the Texan.

"Sammy?" Yasmina's happy expression turns into one heavy with betrayal.

And since no one is looking at the road, we crash into a large boulder.

My leg starts to feel like it's burning.

I'm sorry for leaving this in a cliffhanger!

But I'll release the next chapter the day after tomorrow.
